Mertens Eases Past Asia
For a player who was ranked 12th in the world not so long ago, a win-loss record of 21-20 hardly does justice.
And that’s exactly where Mertens was at when she entered the Monastir Open two weeks ago. Since then, however, Mertens has given her critics – and probably herself too – a reminder of what she is capable of.
In a span of six matches, Mertens has dropped just two sets, winning all six of them and that includes a title victory at Monastir and now a first round rout of Asia Muhammad.
Mertens won her opener 6-3, 6-2 in an hour and 35 minutes with her only challenge coming in the second game of the second set where she dropped her serve.
The Belgian will now hope to make her way through to the deeper end of this competition as well as she hopes to climb back the rankings ladder.

Kalinskaya Blasts Barbora Out
While Kalinskaya has been a a slowly-improving player having reached a career-high of 51st earlier this year following her performances in Guadalajara, Indian Wells and Miami, she has had the going tough with fitness concerns.
There have been six instances of Kalinskaya having to either withdraw from a match or retire from it midway this season. That’s not a number that would please anyone especially given what Kalinskaya has shown to be capable of.
Take the example of the first round here where Kalinskaya was 16/5 coming up against the in-form Barbora Krejcikova and yet, managed to clinch a straight-set win.
The Russian won 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 43 minutes, facing no major concerns in the encounter.

While Kalinskaya has shown she is capable of usurping top players, a combination of Mertens’ good form and the Russian’s fitness woes point to a win for the higher-ranked player in this one.
