Denis Shapovalov v Tomáš Berdych Head to Head

The two men have been twice met before with honours even so far. Berdych won on the grass of Queens in 2017 in a tight three-setter, but Shapovalov returned the favour last May on clay at the Rome Masters.

Shapovalov – Needs to Add Consistency

Despite being rated as one of the best young prospects in world tennis, Shapovalov needs to start to earn that reputation. Although he has won six titles on the ATP Challenger Tour and ITF Futures Circuit, he has yet to translate that into an ATP senior tournament win – or even into an appearance in a final.

His form in 2019 has been modest to say the least, with six losses and six wins, two of which came in the Davis Cup against Slovakia. He needs to start to mount a consistent challenge for titles if he is to realise his undoubted potential.

Berdych – Fighting his Way Back up the Rankings

Berdych is a former top ten player who has featured in a Grand Slam Final – he was beaten by Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon in 2010. He has also reached the semi-finals at all three other Grand Slam events.

However, the past year has not been kind to him, and he was forced to miss most of the 2018 season with a back injury, that saw him plunge down the world rankings. Now he is trying to fight his way back up again.

2019 has gone well for him so far. He reached the final in Doha only to lose to Roberto Bautista-Agut in three sets, and reached the last 16 in Melbourne, knocking out three seeds along the way, before coming up against Nadal again.

Last week he reached the semi-final stage in Montpellier and given a wildcard entry for this tournament, saw off Gilles Simon of France in the first round in straight sets.

Shapovalov v Berdych Predictions & Tips

Shapovalov starts odds-on favourites with the bookmakers at 7/11, which, given his indifferent start to the season, seems generous. Berdych at 26/19 looks more than a decent outside bet.
