Daniil Medvedev v Grigor Dimitrov Head to Head

Medvedev leads 3-2 and he is 3-1 on hard courts. Their last meeting went Dimitrov’s way as he beat the Russian in Indian Wells last year.

Medvedev Continues to March on

Top seed Daniil Medvedev remained strong in the tournament as he brushed aside Italian Jannik Sinner in straight sets in the quarterfinals on Friday.

It’s been a flawless week for Medvedev, who has not dropped a set in the three matches leading up to the semifinal. In fact he has faced just one break point in the three matches and that was against Dominic Thiem in the second round, which he was able to save.

Neither Nikoloz Basilashvili in the first round, not Sinner in the quarters could create a breaking opportunity against the world no. 4

In what turned out to be another convincing performance, Medvedev broke Sinner in the very first game of the match and then held on to the advantage to clinch the first set. He was equally good in the second set, breaking Sinner twice to register a 6-4, 6-2 victory.

The Russian, who is on the brink of a fifth final in 2022, got 76% of his first serve right and won 81% points on the back of the first delivery.

Of the four previous finals this year, Medvedev tasted success in just one of those tournaments and that was at the Los Cabos Open. As he chases a 15th career title, on Saturday he could reach a 27th final on the tour.

Dimitrov Holds Off Giron

World no. 32 Grigor Dimitrov held off a comeback bid from American Marcos Giron in the quarterfinals on Friday to reach the final four stage for the third time this season.

The former no. 3, who had come into the tournament having failed to win consecutive matches in the previous nine tournaments, has now won three in a row. Thanks to that his season record has now improved to 24-20.

Dimitrov, who dispatched Thiago Monteiro and Andrey Rublev in straight sets in the first two rounds, needed almost two hours to beat Giron on Friday. Dimitrov struck 11 aces and 37 winners in the match against 5 aces and 16 winners from his opponent. He also converted half of the eight break points that he held and saved four of seven to beat the American 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

After taking the first set with a solitary break, he came back from a break down in the second only to see the American break again and tie the match.

Roles reversed in the third with the Bulgarian dropping serve after going a break up early. But he broke again later in the set which proved to be decisive.

The eight-time tour-level champion has not won a title since 2017 and he last reached a final in Rotterdam in 2018. Can he end the finals drought on Saturday by beating Medvedev and reaching a 16th career final?

Medvedev v Dimitrov Prediction and Tip

Given the ease with which Medvedev has been winning matches, he looks a difficult player to stop now. Expect the Russian to reach a fifth final of the season with a win on Saturday.
