Dominic Thiem v Maximilian Marterer Head to Head

There has been one match between these two players before this and Thiem won that one at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle in straight sets.

Thiem’s First Match after the Australian Open

There have been worries around Dominic Thiem’s fitness after his first two appearances in tennis tournaments this year. Seeded second at the Qatar Open earlier this year, Thiem was bundled out in the first round by Pierre-Hugues Herbert before his Australian Open shock.

He did manage to win his opener at the year’s first major but needed five sets to defeat Benoit Paire and then lost his second round encounter against Alexei Popyrin.

That being said, Thiem has won the title at Buenos Aires on the two previous occasions he’s played here, making it nine wins in a row at this tournament. That, by itself, should make him the favourite going into not this second round clash but also in the entire tournament.

The problem? His fitness.

Thiem’s been struggling with strange illnesses which have led to difficult and regular colds and that have left him without a lot of match practice. He opted out of the Cordoba Open after having decided not to participate at the Davis Cup either, and while he did feature in a doubles match in this tournament, all eyes will be on how he comes through in his singles opener.

Marterer Trying to Take the Big Step Forward

A former junior Grand Slam runner-up, Marterer entered the top 100 for the first time in 2017 and then on to a career-high ranking of 45th late last year but he has not been able to break away from that. The rankings have fallen again and outside the top 80 and without a string of good performances that could continue.

He did deliver a solid performance in the first round here as he overcame local Facundo Bagnis in straight sets to set up this meeting against Thiem. Some confidence could be had from pushing the former French Open finalist, especially given Thiem’s health issues recently.

Thiem v Marterer Predictions & Tips

Thiem starts overwhelming favourite at 1/4 (bet365) but expecting Marterer to push his Austrian opponent to a corner.  Bet365’s offer of 5/6 for more than 21.5 games in the match looks to be a tempting one.

You can watch & bet on Dominic Thiem v Maximilian Marterer on Thursday, February 14. The match will be held at 10.30 pm BST.
