Alcaraz Has Been Sensational This Year

It’s been a sensational season for Carlos Alcaraz, who at the age of 19 is the youngest world no. 1.

The Spaniard will be chasing a sixth title of the year in Paris and he begins his quest in the second round on Tuesday. Last year, on his debut in the final Masters 1000 tournament, Alcaraz reached as far as the third round before being sent packing by Hugo Gaston.

2022 is different though and the top seed is one of the tournament favourites.

Although he hasn’t reached a final since winning his maiden major at the U.S. Open, he will be happy to have regained form in Basel last week, where he won the first three matches before going down to Felix Auger-Aliassime in the semifinals.

The 19-year-old has set some real high standards this year, reaching seven finals and wining five of them. tat included his first two ATP 1000 titles i Miami and Madrid in addition to his first Grand Slam success.

He also won his first two ATP 500 titles in Rio and Barcelona and finished runner-up in Hamburg and Umag.

Alcaraz will look to make a fast start and hope to go deep this year.

Nishioka Tops Karatsev

Yoshihito Nishioka knocked out a struggling Aslan Karatsev in the first round on Monday to advance to the round of 32 for the second time at the Paris Masters.

The world no. 38 saved seven of seven break points that he faced in the match and converted two of five the he held to win the one-and-a-half hour contest 6-3, 6-4.

Karatsev hit 37 winners in the match, 20 more than the Japanese, but he also made 30 unforced errors to Nishioka’s 5.

The 27-year-old has had a great run this year and a tour-level title and a runner-up finish are a reflection of that.

Nishioka, who also won a Challenger title from two finals, reached his maiden ATP 500 final in Washington and won his second career title at the Korea Open. Can he pull off an upset on Tuesday and progress into the next round?
