Felix Auger-Aliassime v Holger Rune Head to Head

Six days ago they met at Basel final, with Auger-Aliassime winning the title by beating Rune in straight sets. That was their first meeting ever.

Auger-Aliassime Trounces Tiafoe

Felix Auger-Aliassime scored a convincing straight sets win over America’s Frances Tiafoe to march into his second ATP masters semifinal and a first in Paris.

As a result of his quarterfinal win on Friday, Auger-Aliassime extended his current winning streak to 16 matches and he is now a win away from a fourth consecutive final. Over the last three weeks, the Canadian has picked up three indoor titles in Florence, Antwerp and Basel and is looking in great shape to land a fourth in a row.

The Canadian, who had lost all eight finals before this season, won his maiden ATP title in Rotterdam this year and also reached another indoor final in Marseille, but didn’t succeed in wining the title.

Ranked no. 8th in the world, Auger-Aliassime, who booked his place earlier this week at the year-ending ATP Finals in Turin, needed an hour and 34 minutes to dispatch Tiafoe 6-1, 6-3.

The Canadian got 72% of his first serves right and won 86% of those points. He did not allow Tiafoe a single breaking opportunity, while he created 14 chances, capitalising on three of them.

Auger-Aliassime had a tough start to the tournament, needing to come back from a set down to oust Mikael Ymer in a three-and-a-half-hour second round epic. He has looked much better since then, triumphing over Gilles Simon in the second round and over Tiafoe in the last eight. What’s interesting is that he has not been broken over the last two matches.

Can he now defeat Rune for the second time in two weeks and qualify for another final?

Rune Advances as Alcaraz Retires

Just like Auger-Aliassime, Holger Rune too continued his red-hot form in Paris, moving into his maiden ATP 1000 semifinal. Although the Dane was brilliant in the quarterfinal, the win didn’t come in a completed match as  the world no. 1 Carlos Alcaraz was forced to retire with an injury in the second set.

Rune put up a solid show in the first set to draw first blood. Both players were on serve in the second set, before Alcaraz needed treatment on his abdominal muscle at 5-6. The Spaniard eventually was forced to retire in the tiebreak while he trailed Rune 1-3.

Just like, his Saturday’s opponent, Rune too was a finalist in his previous three tournaments. He finished runner-up in Sofia, won the title in Stockholm and then finished runner-up in Basel last week, falling to Auger-Aliassime in straight sets. He has carried that form to Paris, where he has mow won four in four.

Rune defeated Stan Wawrinka in a dramatic two-hour-and-30-minute first round contest, rallying past the Swiss in three. He then scored back-to-back straight set wins over 10th seed Hubert Hurkacz in the second round and the seventh seed Andrey Rublev in the third, before going past Alcaarz in the quarters on Friday.

Thanks to the four wins, Rune is now 17-2 sine the start of the Sofia Open.

It’s been a breakthrough season for the 19-year-old, who has two titles from four finals. He won his maiden title in Munich and then added another in the Swedish capital. Overall he is 37-24 on the tour and 48-27, including qualifiers. If he gets to 50 wins he will have another title by the end of this week. But he faces a huge challenge in the semis on Saturday.

Auger-Aliassime v Rune Prediction and Tip

Auger-Aliassime’s unbeaten streak and his straight sets win over Rune last week make him the favourite in this contest. Expect the Canadian to advance from this contest.
