Daniil Medvedev has had his best start to a season thus far, being a runner-up at the ATP 250 in Brisbane, a fourth round exit at the Australian Open to Novak Djokovic, and a title win at the ATP 250 in Sofia. He has continued his run of form since, into the Rotterdam tournament as well.
Medvedev has looked rather untroubled at Rotterdam with three convincing wins against veterans Jeremy Chardy, Fernando Verdasco, and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The Russian has been in good all round form, with his serve delivering consistently, and has continued to grind down opponents in long rallies. Medvedev’s athleticism has also been on display regularly this season.
The Russian has had his eyes on breaking into the top ten of the ATP rankings and continues to make his march towards it.

Gael Monfils has not had as good a start to the season as his ‘Next Gen’ opponent, but has had some fine wins at Sofia and Rotterdam in the last 2 weeks. Monfils made it to the semi-finals of the ATP 250 at Sofia last week, losing to eventual champion Medvedev.
This week, at Rotterdam, he has had victories against David Goffin, Andreas Seppi, and Damir Dzumhur. His path has not been as convincing as Medvedev, with his first two matches being tight victories. Monfils’ supreme athleticism has served him well, alongside his forehand, which has been on song.
Former world number six and two time Grand Slam semi-finalist, Monfils will be looking for a return to consistent results and a move up in the rankings.

Both are incredible athletes and have the ability to hit the ball from different corners of the court. Monfils has the ability to beat any opponent on his athleticism and ball striking ability. He has been in good form in the last two tournaments and will look to give Medvedev a better fight than he did last week in Sofia.
Medvedev, however seems to be in the form of his life, and has handled all his opponents with ease and confidence. His game has been clicking on all cylinders, and will be hard to stop on current form. A closer match than Sofia on the cards, but expect Medvedev to win in two tight sets, and get closer to the top ten rankings.
