Maria Sakkari v Viktoriya Tomova Head to Head
Their only previous meeting at the highest level came at the 2022 Wimbledon where Sakkari ran off to an easy win. They had faced off in a competitive match on the ITF circuit way back in 2016 as well where Tomova had won on clay.

She was ranked as high as third in the world last season and even now, Sakkari is sixth on the WTA Rankings. Unfortunately for her, however, the Greek number one has just one career title and that came in Rabat in 2019.
Since then, Sakkari has reached five finals at the highest level including two at WTA 1000 tournaments in 2022 but lost all of them. At the 2022 Indian Wells Open, she went down to Iga Swiatek while Jessica Pegula defeated her in the Guadalajara Open final.
The other way of looking at it is the consistency she has shown, having also made the WTA Finals and won all three of her group matches. She lost in the semifinals to the eventual title winner, Caroline Garcia.
Sakkari will hope to start things off well this season, emulating what she had done in 2021 when she made the semifinal of the first competition she featured in that season. Up against a player ranked 90th in the world, she sure will have a good chance of doing just that.

Tomova Hits Career-High Ranking in 2022
Nearly halfway into the last season, Tomova’s performances were going nowhere and she had plunged to 140th in the world.
Four months on from there, Tomova found herself hitting her career-best ranking of 89th in the world and finishing the season ranked 90th.
This was thanks to her performances at the Valencia Open on clay where she reached the quarterfinals but even more so when Tomova made it to the quarterfinals in Eastbourne and semifinal at Bastad.
Tomova hasn’t quite found her bearings in hard court tournaments though, especially at the highest level. Which is why coming up against a player of the calibre of Sakkari might not be the easiest of challenges to start the season.

Expect Tomova to put up some fight but Sakkari, on hard court, should be good enough to carve out a straight-set win here.
