Julia Goerges v Alison Riske Head to Head

This will be their third meeting and Goerges has won both their previous two encounters. The first one came at the Miami Open in 2017 which she won in straight sets but more pertinent to this match would be their match last week in Doha where Riske pushed her opponent to three sets before going down in a very hard-fought clash.

Goerges Looks to Build on Mixed Start

A title win at the Auckland Open kick-started Goerges’ season and while she lost in the opening round of the Australian Open to Danielle Rose Collins, her performances in the non-majors tournaments have been usually better than at the Grand Slams.

This is not to forget that Goerges made it to the semi-final of the 2018 Wimbledon but that has been her only instance of a Grand Slam quarter-final – her second-best showing has been the odd fourth round appearance at the other Slams.

There was a second round exit at St. Petersburg but more importantly, she would be pleased with her quarter-final appearance last month in Doha where she stretched Simona Halep to two tie-breakers before going down to the Romanian.

Similar Beginnings for Riske

It’s been an interesting start to the season for the American Riske. Much like Goerges, she made it to the final of the first tournament she played in at Shenzhen, but she went down to Aryna Sabalenka in that title-decider. And then came a first round exit at the Australian Open, also much like Goerges.

In Doha, last week, the two met at the second round stage where Goerges triumphed in a gruelling battle but take nothing away from Riske, who had made it to the main draw after winning two matches in the qualifiers and then making it to through as a lucky loser.
