Thanasi Kokkinakis v Maxime Cressy Head to Head

These two players have never faced off in a main draw match on the ATP circuit before this. They did play on the Challenger circuit and Wimbledon qualifiers and the scoreline is 1-1.

Kokkinakis Wins Shock Title Last Season

He was 171st on the ATP charts at one stage in 2022. Kokkinakis then won an ATP title, the first of his career and it came at this very tournament and that propelled him up the rankings.

Another fine showing in Miami, where the Aussie made the fourth round as a qualifier ensured Kokkinakis had broken into the top 70 for the first time and hit his career-best.

Since then, however, Kokkinakis won just three main draw matches all season, and as a result of that, his ranking slid down to 93rd by the time the season had ended.

Still, Kokkinakis would be glad he had something to show for his effort having had his issues with form and injuries in the past.

Can he now challenge a player who nearly broke into the top 30 of the ATP charts last year?

Cressy Also Wins Maiden Title in 2022

Before the pandemic hit in 2020, Cressy was ranked 260th in the world but following the return of tennis that season, he has gradually risen up the charts.

So much so that in 2022, he won his first ever title – it came in Newport – and all but broke into the top 30 of the rankings. Having earlier made it to the fourth round at Australian Open, Cressy entered the US Open in 2022 as the 30th seed, the first time ever he had been seeded in a Grand Slam.

He lost in the first round at that season’s final Grand Slam and followed it up with modest returns at the back end of the year.

Despite that, Cressy enters 2023 ranked 34th and will be in line to test some of the top players in the business, especially on hardcourt surfaces.

Kokkinakis v Cressy Prediction and Tip

While Kokkinakis starts off a favourite at 8/11 we cannot help but feel Cressy will have his chances in this encounter and if he takes them, could even win it. Backing him to come through in three.
