Shapovalov Looking to Make a Strong Start

Denis Shapovalov began his season on Monday with a doubles win at the Adelaide International.

Shapovalov, pairing with Sebastian Korda, won the Round of 32 doubles match against the Japanese pairing of Taro Daniel and Yoshihito Nishioka.

The Canadian will now be playing his first singles match of the year on Tuesday.

Shapovalov, who played an important role in Canada’s title success at the ATP Cup and Davis Cup last year, is coming off a 34-26 season. Most of his wins came on hard courts, where he went 22-12.

His individual best in 2022 included runs to the finals of the Korea Open and the Vienna Open, but he failed to win either of those finals, losing to Nishioka and Daniil Medvedev respectively.

In all, the 23-year-old has now featured in 6 singles finals, but the 2019 Stockholm Open success remains his only title on the tour so far.

The lefty, who reached the Australian Open quarterfinal for the first time last year, saw his form dip in the clay and grass tournaments, but he ended the season just as he started, churning out wins on consistent basis on hard courts.

A dip in form in the middle of 2022 season saw him fall out of the top 20, but thanks to a strong finish he moved up the rankings and is starting the year as No. 18. This is the year, when the former no. 10 will look to break back into the top 10 and also hope to win another title.

Hijikata Comes Through Qualifiers

Australia’s Rinky Hijikata qualified for Adelaide International with back-to-back straight sets wins in the qualifying rounds.

Ranked no. 164th in the world, the Aussie defeated France’s Gregoire Barrere 6-2, 6-3 in the first qualifying round on Saturday.
He then ousted former top 50 player and compatriot James Duckworth 7-5, 6-4 on Sunday to reach the main draw.

Hijikata, who did not face a single break point in the match against Barrere, saved 6 of 7 break points and converted 3 of 9 against Duckworth.

The 21-year-old, who won three ITF World Tennis Tour titles from five finals this year, made his tour debut last year in Melbourne.
He is 1-3 at the tour level and will be looking to improve that record further in 2023.

Shapovalov v Hijikata Prediction and Tip

Shapovalov will be a heavy favourite in this contest. He is much more experienced than the Aussie and was also in solid form on hard courts last year. Expect him to win in straight sets.
