Rebecca Marino v Ysaline Bonaventure Head to Head
While these two haven’t played at the highest level, there had been one previous meeting between them at the qualifiers of the 2021 US Open. Marino had won that one in three tight sets.

Dalma Galfi was never a favourite coming into her first round match against Marino but as she showed in the second set of their match, she packs a fight.
The only thing here is Marino is a gritty customer herself and came through their opening round match 6-3, 7-6 (3) in nearly an hour and a half.
Marino, whose previous three attempts at Auckland had all seen her crash out of the tournament before reaching the second round – she had failed to qualify for the main draw on two of those too – was coming into this season-opener on the back of a solid 2022.
And she proved those results last season were no flash in the pan as she broke Galfi thrice in the first set, saved three set-points in the second and then won it in the ensuing tie-breaker.

Qualifier Bonaventure Shocks McNally
After having gotten past two opponents in the qualifying stages of the tournament, Bonaventure overcame long odds and the loss of the first set to shock her opening round opponent.
Caty McNally was 1/2 odds to defeat Bonaventure but it was the Belgian, world number 95 who came through instead.
In a match lasting two hours and 30 minutes, Bonaventure prevailed upon her opponent 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, winning a gritty battle. What was so bizarre about the contest was Bonaventure got herself 21 break-point opportunities in the entire match and converted five of them – one more than her opponent.
Having reached a career-high ranking of 94th in the world last year, Bonaventure will now look to build on it as she works her way into the season’s first Grand Slam without needing to go through the qualifiers to get into the main draw.

Marino starts a favourite here but Bonaventure showed her mettle last round and might not be a pushover. We expect Marino to go through in three though.
