Popyrin Upsets Augur-Aliassime

Although 2023 has just started, Popyrin has already pulled off one of the shocks of the season by beating the number two seed and world number six, Felix Augur Aliassime, in straight sets.

Going into the match, the omens were not very auspicious for the Australian, especially as he had had to qualify for the main draw first, beating two Chinese opponents in the process.

But in a match dominated by serve in its early stages, he earned three break points and converted the third in the ninth game.

And, then, serving for the set, he saved a break back point from the Canadian to seal it.

Augur-Aliassime appeared to have found a way match back into the match when he broke Popyrin early in the second set. But then he dropped his own serve again and it went to a tie-break.

Fortunes fluctuated and both men had their chances, but it was Popyrin who finally earned himself a match point, which he took.

Giron Overcomes French Challenge

Meanwhile Giron was engaged in a tough battle with Richard Gasquet of France, the world number 68.

Gasquet saved a break point in the opening game of the match, but with nothing else to divide them, the first set went to a tie-break, which Giron eventually claimed.

The French serve came under more pressure in the second set, and Gasquet had to save six points before eventually forcing another tie-break. This time, though, he proved the stronger player over the course of it, and he was able to level the match with his second break point.

When Giron went a break down in the third set the writing appeared on the wall for the American. Gasquet had two match points, could not take either of them, and Giron was able to break back to level the match.

The Frenchman was made to regret his generosity, because he was then broken, and when Giron earned a match point of his own, he made no mistake.

Popyrin v Giron Prediction and Tip

Popyrin has already pulled off one surprise in this tournament, and, with the Adelaide crowd behind him, he may just be capable of repeating the trick.
