Denis Shapovalov v Roman Safiullin Head to Head

Denis Shapovalov leads Roman Safiullin 1-0 in their series. Incidentally, that encounter took place on Australian soil at last year’s ATP Cup. The Canadian won his singles rubber against Safiullin in three sets.

Shapovalov Survives Hijikata Scare

Denis Shapovalov does not have a great record in the opening rounds of tournaments and especially when he loses the first set. He had to change it against a spirited qualifier in Rinky Hijikata.

The Aussie, playing on home soil, was unquestionably the better player in the first set, as Shapovalov took a while to get his bearings right. The Canadian lefty served four costly double faults in the first set and was broken twice. His game was a tad rusty and needed a better response.

Thankfully for Shapovalov he was able to refocus and coupled with his opponent’s energy waning, he was able to turn the match around.

In the second set, he got two breaks in quick succession and went on to level the match. Hijikata was under massive pressure in almost every service game throughout the third set.

Shapovalov was composed and those shots that initially were long or wide, were now beginning to find the right spots on the court. Hijikata coughed up some decisive unforced errors at 3-3 and was broken. Shapovalov then survived a huge eighth game in the decider before going on to clinch victory.

Safiullin Makes Strong Start

Roman Safiullin came through two very good qualifying wins over the weekend and was clearly at an advantage against Mikael Ymer.

The Russian overpowered his Swedish opponent and won in straight sets. He had already acclimatized with the courts in Adelaide and made a fast start by taking the lead early on with break to 15. Then he had to save a break point on his own serve to hold for 4-2 in the opening set.

Ymer who is so assured from the baseline couldn’t quite match up to the Russian’s power and accuracy. In the second set, it was more of the same as Safiullin got an early break and pulled away.

He then came through a lung buster of a game at 2-1, before getting the insurance break to go 4-1 up. He finished the match on his fourth match point.

Shapovalov v Safiullin Prediction and Tip

Shapovalov cannot afford another slow start here. Ymer paid a hefty price against Safiullin who has already accumulated sufficient playing time in Adelaide. But with that said, Shapovalov’s resilience was admirable against Hijikata. If he plays as he did in the third set, he should be expected to advance into the quarterfinals.
