Linette Secures Poland’s Qualification Against the Swiss

Poland appeared set to be hauled into a decisive mixed doubles rubber against Switzerland, but Magda Linette produced a come-from-behind win against the crafty Jil Teichmann to score the winning point in the tie.

Linette dropped the first set of her United Cup campaign against the Swiss southpaw. She lost her concentration despite taking a 3-0 lead and looked to be cruising. But Teichmann is a feisty competitor and pulled off a handful of trick shots to get into the match.

Linette, as she put herself in her post-match interview, was able to push the reset button and power to take the second set despite failing to serve it out at 5-3.

In the decider, Teichmann was clearly feeling it physically and two costly double faults gave the 30-year-old Pole the upper hand. She stormed to clinch the decider 6-1 without facing a single break point.

Bronzetti Delivers for Italy

Martina Trevisan’s struggles in singles have been evident, but compatriot Lucia Bronzetti has stepped up to the plate for the Italians who thumped Norway 5-0 to qualify.

Bronzetti recorded another emphatic win in singles action, beating Ulrikke Eikeri, who was called in to replace Malene Helgo. The 24-year-old from Rimini is garnering a lot of respect from her peers after producing a professional display despite the tie being done and dusted a day earlier.

Bronzetti defeated Eikeri 6-2 7-5, following up on her 6-2 6-0 win over Laura Pigossi. The world No. 54 is coming off a great 2022, sitting at a career-high ranking, but nearly made a melee of her match against Norway’s Eikeri.

She led 6-2 4-2 before giving her opponent a route back into the contest. Eikeri reeled off three straight games and served for the set at 5-4, before Bronzetti regrouped to halt her charge.

Linette v Bronzetti Prediction and Tip

This is the fourth match in the tie, but it could absolutely be pivotal in determining who qualifies. Both players have been very impressive so far, producing the goods when it matters. But Poland’s Linette has probably faced stiff competition at this tournament thus far and might be well adept to grind out a win down the stretch.
