Jo-Wilfried Tsonga v Andrey Rublev Head to Head

The players have met once on the ATP circuit in February 2018 at Montpellier with Tsonga winning in straight sets.

Tsonga Looks to Continue His Strong Comeback to the Tour

French veteran Jo-Wilfriend Tsonga returns to Marseille, at the back of a strong start to 2019, returning from a long injury lay-off. Tsonga has had a promising six week thus far, which included the ATP 250 title at Montpellier, and a semi-final run at the ATP 250 in Brisbane. A former top ten, and Grand Slam finalist, Tsonga was out for most of 2018 with a knee injury.

One of the few to have beaten the top ranked players on the big stage, Tsonga’s recent form is one that is encouraging for both him, and the tour.

With a powerful serve, and solid groundstrokes, the indoor courts have always worked to his advantage. Tsonga will be looking for another deep run, buoyed by home crowd support, as he hopes to make further inroads into the ATP rankings.

Marseille has been a happy hunting ground for Tsonga, with three title wins here already.

Can Rublev Return To Prime Form?

Young Russian Andrey Rublev was a key member of the “Next Gen” club in 2017. Rublev made the finals of the Next Gen ATP Finals at Milan that year, as well a winning his first ATP singles title at Umag Open, and making the US Open quarter finals.

2018 got off to a good start for Rublev as well, but a back injury at the Monte Carlo Masters saw him miss out for most of the year, thereafter.

Currently ranked number 100, Rublev was ranked as high as number 31, a year ago. Rublev’s return in 2019 has not been particularly encouraging with early losses at the ATP 250 in Doha, as well as at the Australian Open.

Only 21 years of age, Rublev has a powerful game, with strong groundstrokes and a penetrating serve. Having recovered from his injury by now, he will be looking for some favorable and consistent results to increase his confidence and move up the rankings.

Seen a potential future Grand Slam winner, it is only a matter of time before he is back on course.

Tsonga v Rublev Predictions & Tips

It promises to be an exciting encounter between two players on a comeback. Rublev is one that can break any opponent’s game with his powerful hitting. Tsonga on the other hand will be riding high on confidence, from his performances of the last month and a half.

A tight battle is on the cards, but with Rublev still rusty from return, and Tsonga more settled since, expect Tsonga to win in two well fought sets.
