Sofia Kenin v Coco Gauff Head to Head

Kenin leads 1-0, last beating Gauff in the 2020 Australian Open in three sets.

Kenin Hoping for a Good Year

2022 was a year to forget for Sofia Kenin. Injury woes and the consequent form problems saw her drop out of the top 400 before she ended the season at the #149 position.

The 24-year-old American was out of commission for almost six months; after her first-round loss in Indian Wells, her next tournament was the Citi Open.

In the closing leg of the season, Kenin’s best results came in Midland Challenger, WTA Cleveland, and ITF Tyler in the form of late-round appearances.

As for her pedigree, it is definitely on par to go head-to-head with the likes of Gauff. Kenin won the 2020 Australian Open and reached the final in the Paris Slam that season. In addition, she has five career finals to her name as well.

Here in Auckland, Sofia bagged her first WTA tour-level win since August after beating Xinyu Wang 7-6(6), 6-3. A well-fought win like that should do well for her confidence.

Gauff Moves Past Maria

Number one seed Cori Coco Gauff started her Auckland Open campaign with a solid, straight-set win over Tatjana Maria. The match lasted 87 minutes as the 18-year-old American won 6-4, 6-1 in what was a routine match for her.

Now ranked World No. 7, Gauff is looking to build on her previous season with more big-ticket wins and, hopefully, more silverware.

She reached the French Open final on the singles side before losing to Iga Swiatek in straight sets. Additionally, she reached the quarterfinal at the US Open, WTA Doha, San Jose Open, Canadian Open, US Open, and Guadalajara Open. On the back of these consistent results, Gauff also qualified for the WTA Finals but couldn’t make it past the group stage.

Gauff v Kenin Prediction and Tip

Gauff is clearly the heavy favourite here, but Kenin has the experience and skill set to surprise. At this point, it is a matter of fitness and rustiness – if Sofia can manage to take a set off her opponent, she will have a fighting chance.
