Benjamin Bonzi v Tallon Griekspoor Head to Head

This will be their first tour level meeting. Bonzi won a lower-level match on clay in 2017.

Bonzi Knocks Out the Second Seed

World no. 60 Benjamin Bonzi knocked out second seed Botic van de Zandschulp in a close three-set semifinal at the Pune Open on Friday to reach his maiden ATP final.

The Frenchman, who won six Challenger titles in 2021 and two last year, needed two hours and 32 minutes to dispatch the world no. 35, 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (5-7), 6-1.

In the first two sets, Bonzi broke early to seize advantage, but Van de Zandschulp got the break back on both the occasions taking the sets to tiebreaks. While Bonzi dominated the first set tiebreak, it was the second seed who edged the second set tiebreak to draw level at one-set all.

It was, however, the 26-year-old Frenchman who took control of the match in the final set, racing to a 5-0 lead with a double break before Van de Zandshulp finally got on the board. But Bonzi served out the match in the next game to keep his hopes of a maiden title alive.

Bonzi, who won 76% points on his first serve, struck 10 aces in the match and won a 110 of the 207 points in the match.

The Frenchman is off to a 4-0 start in 2023. He won the opening match of the tournament 6-0, 6-3 against Tseng Chun-hsin and then defeated Emil Ruusuvuori 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) in the second round.

He didn’t lose a set in the quarterfinal either, ousting sixth seed Filip Krajinović 7-6. 6-4. The semifinals saw him drop a set for the first time in 2023, but he still managed to win after a dominant final set. Can he now win his first ever ATP title?

Griekspoor Powers Past Karatsev

There were two Dutchmen in the semifinals of the Pune Open. While Van de Zandschulp was knocked out, Tallon Griekspoor kept the Dutch hopes alive in the tournament, making the final by ousting eighth seed Aslan Karatsev in the semifinal on Friday.

In what was an exemplary service display from Griekspoor, the Dutchman struck 11 aces and won 85% (45 of 53) of his service points in the match. He didn’t face a single break point in the entire contest but converted 2 of 5 that he held to win the one-hour-and-23-minute contest 7-6 (7-3), 6-1.

Just like Bonzi, Griekspoor is also in his first-ever ATP final. An 11-time winner on the Challenger tour, he won eight of those in 2021 and one last year.

The world no. 95 is yet to drop a set in the tournament. He ousted Jaume Munar 6-4, 7-5 in the first round and then dispatch Marco Cecchinato 6-4, 6-4 in round 2.

He got lucky in the quarterfinals as top seed Marin Cilic withdrew from the match with a knee injury even before the start of the contest.

Griekspoor was dominant against Karatsev in the semifinal as well and will be hoping to keep the momentum going in the final.

Bonzi v Griekspoor Prediction and Tip

With both players on top of their games, and a maiden ATP title in line, it is expected to be a cracking contest. A third set may be needed to decide the winner.

Bonzi was in great form last year as well, reaching two ATP semifinals. He has carried that form this year as well and has won all four of his matches in the tournament so far. He will be a slight favourite in the final.
