Kokkinakis Downs Rublev, Keeps Title Defence Alive

Thanasi Kokkinakis won this event last year and he hopes of doing it again with a major win over Rublev a big boost to his chances.

Kokkinakis opened the new year well playing at home in Adelaide but he ran into a very good Jannik Sinner that proved better. This week he stayed in Adelaide to play the second event and it’s been going better. A win over Andrey Rublev was certainly impressive and it wasn’t something that many expected.

He played well but more important served well. That won him the Adelaide event last year and it will certainly be something he will rely on against Kecmanovic as well. He’s actually favoured although being the worse player realistically.

It’s because he’s playing in his hometown and he’s full of confidence. After that win over Rublev, it would be foolish to think he can’t keep it going.

Kecmanovic Comes Back Against Kubler

Miomir Kecmanovic was in a lot of trouble against Jason Kubler but he remained calm and won the match in three sets.

The win was a rather impressive one as he held his serve in the second-set tiebreak where Kubler could have finished it off. Playing in Australia, against an Aussie and doing that takes some bravery and he showed it. The comeback was completed with another solid third set.

The Serbian did not open the year as spectacularly as he did last year but he’s looking better with every match. The only match he lost in 2023 was to Daniil Medvedev and that’s not completely terrible.

The next match will be a very tricky one but a chance to make a semi-final so early will be important. He’s defending a lot of points in 2023 and starting off strongly would go a long way as he looks to establish himself in the top 20.

Kokkinakis v Kecmanovic Prediction and Tip

Kokkinakis is slightly favoured and that is mostly due to the crowd factor. He will be ready to go and he’s playing and serving well. Kecmanovic is the better player overall and could win this match but if he does it will be most likely in three sets.
