The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between Galan who is 26, and his French opponent, nine years older.

Galan’s Second Appearance in Melbourne

This will be Galan’s second appearance in the main draw in Melbourne – his first two years ago ended in a first round defeat.

The Colombian number one is primarily known as a clay court player, and won two Challenger titles on that surface last year, in the Chile and the USA.

However, he also reached the third round of both Wimbledon and the USA.

His performance in New York was noteworthy because not only did he come through qualifying to make his first round debut, but he then beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round, his first victory over a top 5 player.

In the second round he heat Jordan Thompson of Australia in a bad tempered match, which saw the umpire intervene at one stage to stop the pair coming to blows.

Two quarter-final appearances on the main tour, saw him close the year close to his all-time high ranking.

His one match this year in Adelaide saw him pull out injured after dropping the first set to Mackenzie McDonald of the USA.

That was just precautionary and he is expected to be fully fit for the encounter with Chardy.

Chardy Makes Long Delayed Return to Action

Chardy’s best memory of the Australian Open was reaching the quarter-final here back in 2013, although he has made the fourth round of the three other Grand Slams, and was the runner-up in doubles on home soil in the French Open back in 2013.

Three years ago he reached a career high ranking of 24 in the world, although his one senior career title was won back in 2009 in Stuttgart.

It would take him another nine years to reach another final, beaten on the grass of Rosmalen by compatriot Richard Gasquet.

However, he now has no ranking having missed the entire 2022 season after suffering a variety of health issues after getting vaccinated,

That left him unable to even train as he experienced a range of side-effects after he received his anti-Covid jab.

This will be his first singles match since losing in straight sets to Matteo Berrettini in the first round of the US Open in 2021,

Galan v Chardy Prediction and Tip

After his long absence from the tour, Chardy will just be glad to be playing again and, at this stage, anything else will just be a bonus.

Galan should have the edge when it comes to both match fitness and confidence on court.
