Shuai Zhang v Patricia Maria Tig Head to Head

This will be their first meeting on the WTA Tour.

Tig is Low on Momentum

Former world number 56 Patricia Maria Tig hasn’t played a whole lot of tennis in the last couple of years. She took a hiatus of over 14 months in 2021-22, causing her to plummet off the top 600.

However, the current #790 finds herself on a resurgent path. Since returning in September, the 28-year-old has focussed on the ITF tour, winning the title in Varna, the finalist silverware in Antalya, and reaching mid-rounds in a few other events.

This year, Tig has set her sights on the big tour as she started with Hobart International. The match didn’t go as per the plan, having endured a 3-6, 1-6 hammering from Jasmine Paolini.

Patricia is playing under protected ranking this time in Melbourne. She has never made it past the first round here – but her three WTA finals and Zhang’s inconsistent results should help her on Tuesday.

Zhang is 0-2 so far

33-year-old Shuai Zhang, current #24, has failed to bag a win in January so far. Participating in both Adelaide tournaments, she lost to Liudmila Samsonova and Ana Bogdan in the opening matches.

In the doubles department, the 23rd seed reached the quarters in Adelaide 1 with Ekaterina Alexandrova.

As a doubles specialist with 25 WTA finals (including three majors) and a former number two ranking, Zhang is more than capable of turning this form around. She also enjoyed a decent spell in 2022, ending with 39-31 and two trophies.

Zhang v Tig Prediction and Tip

Shuai is prone to losing against the underdogs; last season she lost 9 matches to players ranked outside the top 80. Tig has a precedent along with being well-experienced. She can test her Chinese adversary at the very least.
