Concerns Around Zheng’s Fitness

World no. 30 Qinwen Zheng has got her 2023 off to a decent strat and she brings a 4-2 season record to Melbourne.

Fans of the Chinese player, however, will be a touch concerned as she pulled out of her last match against Petra Kvitova in Adelaide-2. Zheng lost a closely fought first set tiebreak and immediately withdrew from the second round contest. It is said that the move was precautionary after she had done some damage to her thigh during the first round clash against Rogers.

Zheng had fought back from a set down to beat Rogers in the opener. That win was preceded by another come-from-behind win for Zheng in the second qualifying round. Zheng had double bagelled Mia Repac in the first qualifying round of the tournament.

She had also beaten Annett Kontaveit in three sets in the season opener in Adelaide-1, but lost to Victoria Azarenka.

So, the Chinese has so far displayed her fighting spirit in 2023 and would be eager to continue that in the first major of the season. It is just her second appearance in Melbourne. Last year, she debuted as a qualifier and defeated Aliaksandra Sasnovich in three sets, but was outplayed by Maria Sakkari in the second round.

The 20-year-old had a very good 2022 season. She reached her maiden WTA final in Japan, won her maiden WTA Challenger title in Valencia and also won her eighth ITF title in Orlando during a 39-19 season. She also broke into the top 100 for the first time and soared to career-high ranking of 25 in October.

Currently ranked no. 30 in the world, can she keep impressing in 2023?

Galfi Broke Into Top 100 Last Year

World no. 86 Dalma Galfi is set to make her main draw debut at the Australian Open but she is yet to register a win in 2023.

Galfi, who is relatively new to the scene, made an impression at the U.S. Open last year, reaching the third round of the tournament. The 24-year-old finished 2022 with a 37-26 record from all tournaments and produced her best result at the Contrexéville Open, where she reached her first-ever WTA 125 final, before falling to Sara Errani.

Besides that clay court final, she also featured in a grass court final at the ITF tournament in Ilkley.

Galfi also broke into the top 100 for the first time last year and peaked to no. 79 in September.

The Hungarian is yet to win in 2023. She lost her opening round match in Auckland to Rebecca Marino. Then in the first qualifying round in Adelaide-2, Galfi won the first set against Anastasia Potapova in the first round, but the Russian came back in the second to tie the contest before Galfi withdrew from the contest.

It will be interesting to see if Galfi can put up a good show in the opener against Zheng.

Zheng v Galfi Prediction and Tip

Zheng’s a better player, she showed that with her consistency at the highest level last year. She is also off to a decent start, having knocked out couple of good players at the start of the year. If she is 100% fit, expect the Chinese to win the contest in straight sets.
