Thanasi Kokkinakis v Fabio Fognini Head to Head

Thanasi Kokkinakis leads Fabio Fognini 2-0 in Tour-level meetings, winning in Cincinnati in 2015, and more recently in Geneva last season.

Kokkinakis’ Adelaide Defence Comes to Halt

Thanasi Kokkinakis won his first ATP title in his home city of Adelaide last season, but there be no repeat of such memories this time.

The Aussie, currently ranked 110 in the world, looked like he would run the gauntlet when he beat countryman Alexei Popyrin and the top seed Andrey Rublev.

But he met his match in the semifinal, against the ATP’s ultimate Ironman Roberto Bautista Agut. Kokkinakis looked like he would produce a comeback win, but was worn down by the determined Spaniard in three sets.

Still, while his title defense came to a screeching halt, Kokkinakis has plenty of optimism heading to the 2023 Australian Open. He looks primed to win his first match in Melbourne since 2021.

Fognini Loses Auckland Bout to Brooksby

Fabio Fognini’s stay in Auckland was cut short as the Italian veteran started his 2023 campaign with a defeat. Fognini had gone toe to toe with the young American, showcasing his superior weight of shot and athleticism even at 35, but could not keep up his momentum beyond one set.

After winning the first set in a tiebreak, Fognini was pegged back as Brooksby began to find his range more consistently to level the match. And in the third set, Fognini could not enough purchase on the ball behind the return to worry his opponent.

Defeat in the opening match of the season is not a good way to start things off, but historically, Fognini has saved his best tennis Down Under for the Australian Open.

The 35-year-old has reached the second week of the year’s first Grand Slam four times – which is no mean feat – but he’s also had a series of first-round exits in his CV. Is another early elimination on the cards here?

Kokkinakis v Fognini Prediction and Tip

Fognini can turn it on against any opposition at any time. But he is largely unpredictable. Kokkinakis is playing very well right now and it is hard to see him losing control of things here.
