Tommy Paul v Jan-Lennard Struff Head to Head

Tommy Paul leads Jan-Lennard Struff 2-0 in the series. Paul defeated the big-serving German on the clay of Parma and the indoor hard courts of Bercy – both in the 2021 season.

Could Paul Deliver His Grand Slam Breakthrough?

Tommy Paul has been to the second week of a Grand Slam once in his career thus far. He reached the fourth round of Wimbledon last summer, taking full advantage of a generous draw before being dismissed by Cameron Norrie.

And this Australian Open draw could very well throw up a possible passage into the fourth round and beyond if Paul plays his cards, and the top seeds tumble.

Paul has two very winnable rounds to start things off, but he may have to take down Casper Ruud in the third round – the highest seed he could face to reach the second week.

The American has played two matches so far in 2023 and won’t be getting carried away just yet. He defeated Christopher O’Connell in Adelaide before losing to Jack Draper.

Struff Chasing Second Win in Melbourne

In singles competition, the Australian Open is undoubtedly Jan-Lennard’s worst Grand Slam in terms of results. But at least he has had some success in doubles, reaching the semifinal back in 2018.

But that aside, he’s had some tough draws, playing the likes of Djokovic and Roger Federer in the first round in previous years and falling to some close defeats in other years.

And he arrives in the 2023 edition looking for just his second main draw, despite featuring in eight previous editions. Something is clearly not right especially when you consider that outdoor hard courts are where a player like Struff should thrive.

But strangely enough, he has had the bulk of his success on clay, winning the most matches and the most titles. This year, Struff has had to go through qualifying to earn his spot in the draw, but he did so without dropping a set. Could he cause a shock by taking down the much-fancied American?

Paul v Struff Prediction and Tip

Struff looked in supreme form in qualifying, but Tommy Paul’s standard cannot be compared to any of the opponents he faced a week ago. The American hits just as hard as the German, and with a lot more accuracy. It will be a tough outing make no mistake about it, but Paul should have the edge if we get a tiebreak or two.
