Jenson Brooksby v Christopher O’Connell Head to Head

Christopher O’Connell leads Jenson Brooksby 1-0, winning a quarterfinal encounter in San Diego last year.

Brooksby Makes Auckland Semis

Jenson Brooksby’s 2023 season began in Auckland where the American scored three quality wins to make the semifinal. However, he was outplayed by British No. 1 Cameron Norrie and lost in straight sets.

Despite that defeat, Brooksby was able to end his dismal run of four consecutive defeats to round off his 2022 season, with his last coming last September when he beat Soonwoo Kwon in Seoul.

After a breakthrough run in 2021 on the Challenger and ATP Tours, Brooksby did not emulate the high standards in 2022, clinging on to his Top 50 ranking, and disappointingly won’t be seeded at the Australian Open.

But nevertheless, it represents a step in the right direction for the 22-year-old who is playing the year’s first Grand Slam for the first time in his career. Last year, Brooksby spent the opening weeks of the season playing Challenger events in Columbus and Dallas.

Can O’Connell Serve Another Upset at Home?

Christopher O’Connell has had his fair share of stunning wins at the Australian Open. He upset Jan-Lennard Struff in 2021 when the German was playing peak tennis.

Last year he defeated a Top 20 player Diego Schwartzman en route to the third round – his best-ever showing at Melbourne Park.

This year, O’Connell comes to his home slam sitting at a career-high ranking after winning two ATP Challenger titles in 2022, and also reaching his first ATP semifinal in San Diego where he incidentally beat Jenson Brooksby en route.

O’Connell has started the year with a few close defeats. He lost the first round in Adelaide 1 to Miomir Kecmanovic, and did the same in Adelaide 2, losing as a lucky loser to Tommy Paul.

Brooksby v O’Connell Prediction and Tip

At 28, O’Connell looks a lot like a late bloomer. Brooksby will probably win this purely due to his talent, but he has a battle in his hands playing a home favorite. As far as first-round upsets go, it may be worth a shot backing the Australian at such long odds.
