Goffin Seeks First Win in Melbourne Since 2020

David Goffin is winless at Melbourne Park for three years. His last win came in 2020 when he defeated Pierre-Hugues Herbert in five sets en route to the third round of that tournament.

Incidentally, Goffin will have the chance to return to winning ways against a French debutant in Laurent Lokoli. The Belgian started the year on Australian soil, but his Belgium team were eliminated in the group stage of the United Cup.

Goffin lost both of his singles rubbers against the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas and Grigor Dimitrov. He made the trip to New Zealand thereafter to play the ASB Classic in Auckland.

He did manage to get his season on track with a pair of wins but was eliminated in the quarterfinal stage by the eventual champion Richard Gasquet.

Lokoli Qualifies for Second Australian Open Main Draw

It has taken Laurent Lokoli eight years, but he is finally in the main draw of the Australian Open for the second time. The Frenchman qualified for the event after beating Sebastian Ofner in the final round of qualifying.

Lokoli has had a rollercoaster year and we’re not even past January. He reached the final of the Noumea Challenger just a week ago, and about three days before he departed for Melbourne.

The 28-year-old played in quite a handful of three-setters at that Challenger event, but he looked to have wrapped up his first title at that level when he lobbed Raul Brancaccio on championship point. Unfortunately for him, the shot was called long, and after a few games, there was a long rain delay.

Momentum swayed Brancaccio’s way after the rain interruption and managed to turn the match around and won. For Lokoli, it was a difficult pill to swallow, but at least he did manage to sort his head and qualified for the Australian Open.

Goffin v Lokoli Prediction and Tip

For Lokoli, entering the qualifying draw in Melbourne with self-doubt was never easy, knowing that he spurned a championship point to win his first Challenger title. But then again, he redeemed himself. If he can pull off the upset he will forget about it entirely. But Goffin should be expected to play his best tennis to counter the French qualifier.
