Sorana Cirstea v Yulia Putintseva Head to Head

Putintseva leads Cirstea 3-2 in their head-to-head, but the pair haven’t clashed since 2019.

Can Cirstea Serve Another Melbourne Magic?

Sorana Cirstea produced an excellent run into the second week of the Australian Open last year. She beat former finalist Petra Kvitova in her opening match and 2021 Roland Garros runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova en route to the fourth round where she took a set off Iga Swiatek before losing in three.

It was her joint-best run Down Under, having also achieved that feat back in 2017.

She arrives in Melbourne this time, perhaps undercooked after losing in each of her last two warm-up tournaments in Adelaide. Her only main draw win in 2023 came when she defeated Swiss one-hander Viktorija Golubic in straight sets.

But if last year is anything to go by, Cirstea won’t be bothered by her form in these tune-up events. She didn’t have the perfect pre-Australian Open swing, but she still played her best tennis when it mattered. So, write her off at your own peril.

Putintseva Fails to Inspire Kazakhstan’s United Cup Bid

Yulia Putintseva’s 2023 season started at the United Cup where Kazakhstan were eliminated in the group stage. For Putintseva, her task of taking down the WTA’s Top 10 members in Iga Swiatek and Belinda Bencic was a mountain to climb.

The short-tempered Kazakh was in action at the WTA Hobart International this past week, where she looked to have her mojo back, scoring a pair of wins to get her season back on track.

But in the quarterfinals stage, she lost to the in-form Anna Blinkova who avenged their reverse meeting at the China Open which Putintseva dropped just one game in the whole match.

Putintseva has a series of early exits in Melbourne on her resume. Last year she lost to Harmony Tan in the first round, so she will be wary of falling prey yet again.

Cirstea v Putintseva Prediction and Tip

Putintseva tends to be a hit-and-miss, and right now she is missing a lot more. Cirstea should scrape past the inconsistent Kazakh.
