Tatjana Maria v Lucrezia Stefanini Head to Head

Tatjana Maria leads Lucrezia Stefanini 1-0 in their head-to-head, with that meeting taking place on the ITF circuit back in 2019.

Can Maria Take Advantage of the Draw?

Tatjana Maria can be extremely dangerous when she gets in the groove. And having a winnable opening match should aid her momentum.

Last year, Maria faced Sakkari in two of the four Grand Slams, which is not the sort of introduction you would want of playing a Top 10 player right off the gates.

But at Wimbledon, she got a lucky break, playing a qualifier in her first match, and used it as a platform to try all sorts of shots and build up momentum.

This time, the German doesn’t have to worry about playing a Top 10 player early doors. It will be a qualifier in Lucrezia Stefanini. And if Maria can iron out the kinks, she could prove a handful. She has the deftest of touches at the net and her unorthodox style of play can make life difficult for the WTA’s counterpunchers.

Stefanini Qualifies for Maiden Australian Open

Lucrezia Stefanini will be one of six Italians in the main draw of this year’s Australian Open, which points to an increasing wealth of talent in their ranks.

At 24, Stefanini won her final round of qualifying against Saschia Vickery, albeit via a retirement when she led 6-0 3-0. Last year it was heartbreak from the opening round of qualifying, losing in three sets to Olga Govortsova. But Stefanini will make her Grand Slam main draw debut in 2023.

She has clearly been inspired by compatriots Bronzetti and Cocciaretto who are steadily climbing the WTA rankings. Stefanini arrives in Melbourne while ranked outside the Top 100, but has made serious inroads since the start of the 2022 season where she won three ITF titles.

Could the qualifier upstage the veteran and score the biggest win of her life?

Maria v Stefanini Prediction and Tip

This will be unlike any qualifying opponent Stefanini has faced. Maria’s unorthodox brand of tennis makes her a formidable opponent on fast surfaces. I expect the German to slice and dice her way into the second round.
