Carreno Busta Holds Off Cachin

Pablo Carreno Busta got his first win of the season as he knocked out Argentina’s Pedro Cachin in straight sets in the first round of the Australian Open.

The World no. 15 struck 15 aces and 46 winners on his way to a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) victory.

In the two-hour-and-eight-minute contest, Carreno Busta won 90% of his points on the back of his first delivery. He saved both the break points that he faced during the match and converted two of the six that he held.

With Cachin also serving well during the match, there were no breaks of serve in the first and the third sets. The Spaniard overcame a minibreak in the opening set tiebreak while dominating the third set tiebreak.

The 14th seed has at least reached the third round in the past six appearances in Melbourne and will be eyeing another Round of 32 spot on Thursday. He had lost his season opener to Kwon Soon-woo in Adelaide-2, but found some form in the opening round of the Australian Open on Tuesday.

He is a two-time U.S. Open semifinalist but has never made it past the fourth round in Melbourne, reaching the round of 16 in 2018 and last year. Can he build on the start and go deep this year?

Bonzi Bounces Back to Beat Bellucci

Benjamin Bonzi bounced back after dropping the first set in the opening round against Mattia Bellucci to beat the qualifier in a four-set contest.

After conceding the only break in the first set., Bonzi broke early in the second only to see the Italian get the break back immediately. Bonzi, however, got another break late in the set, to tie the match at one-set all.

In the third, it was Bellucci who got an early break, but Bonzi responded immediately, sending the set back on serve after winning the next game. Both players then did a good job of holding their serves, until Bonzi got a minibreak in the tiebreak which proved to be decisive.

With Bonzi up by two-sets-to-one the momentum had shifted towards the World no. 48, who then got the sole break of the final set to seal the three-hour-and-16-minute contest 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

Bonzi struck 15 aces, six more than his opponent, and hit 42 winners to Bellucci’s 37.

The 26-year-old has had a great start to 2023, having also reached his maiden ATP final at the Maharashtra Open this month. Bonzi, who has advanced to the second round in his second straight Australian Open, was beaten by Tallon Griekspoor in the final of his season opener in Pune.

He is now improved to 5-2 for the season. Can he pull off an upset on Thursday?

Carreno Busta v Bonzi Prediction and Tip

Carreno Busta is off to a solid start. He is the more experienced player and has done well in Melbourne over the last six years. He will be the favourite to win this contest and advance to the third round. But given the form Bonzi is in, he won’t allow the Spaniard to just run away with the contest. Expect at least four sets in the match.
