Liudmila Samsonova v Donna Vekic Head to Head

It is 1-0 to Vekic; she beat Samsonova in the 2019 French Open round one 6-2, 6-4.

Vekic Survives Selekhmeteva

Donna Vekic did not have the easiest of the starts in the 2023 Australian Open. Playing the #179 Oksana Selekhmeteva, the former World No. 19 found herself in a three-hour slogfest that ended in a wild 6-2, 2-6, 7-6(10) win for her.

The Croatian wasn’t in her element, having committed 40 unforced errors and winning 71% of the points behind the first serve.

Nonetheless, the fact remains that Vekic is 4-0 in 2023 so far. Her last tournament was the United Cup, where she went unbeaten – without losing a set – against Alize Cornet, Maria Carle, and Despina Papamichail.

Now ranked World No. 64, the 26-year-old is looking to put her career back on track after trysts with injuries and surgery. She finished last season at 28-20, with her runner-up feat in WTA San Diego proving to be her redeeming grace. As a qualifier, Donna dispatched some big names like Maria Sakkari, Karolina Pliskova, Aryna Sabalenka, and Danielle Collins.

Samsonova Moves Past Paolini

World No. 20 Liudmila Samsonova enjoyed a comfortable outing on Tuesday as she beat Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 6-4, in just 71 minutes. While she committed 24 unforced errors, she struck 23 winners – compared to Paolini’s 5.

The 24-year-old Russian arrived for the Slam on the heels of a slow start to the year. Competing in Adelaide 1 and Adelaide 2, she walked away with a record of 1-2. The sole win came against Shuai Zhang in three sets, whereas the losses were at the hands of Aryna Sabalenka and Amanda Anisimova.

However, Samsonova enjoyed a breakthrough spell in 2022, landing her in the top 20. She won three singles titles – Washington Open, Cleveland Open, and Pan Pacific Open, and made it to round four in the US Open. Her final tally was 30-17, making her second consecutive season where she won at least 30 matches.

Samsonova v Vekic Prediction and Tip

This is likely to be a close match that can go either way. Vekic is more than comfortable against the top 10 players, and beating Samsonova should not be too difficult. It all comes down to her health and fitness.

For now, Liudmila is the odds-on favourite.
