Jessica Pegula v Marta Kostyuk Head to Head

Pegula won their only meeting in Cincinnati last year. It was a three-set contest with the American fighting back from a set down to defeat the Ukrainian.

Pegula Fends Off Sasnovich

World no. 3 Jessica Pegula moved into the third round of the Australian Open with a straight sets win over Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the second round on Wednesday.

The win may not have been as easy as her first round victory over Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian, as the Belarusian put up a stern resistance in the second set, however, the American eventually came out on top in an hour and 32 minutes.

Pegula looked in splendid form in the opening set, breaking Sasnovich thrice while getting broken just once in the set. She looked solid in the second set as well, going up a break twice, but the world no. 38 broke back on both the occasions to keep the set on serve. Sasnovich made things difficult for the third seed in the tiebreak as well. But eventually Pegula edged the tiebreak for a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) victory.

Pegula, who reached back-to-back quarterfinals over the last two years, had begun her 2023 campaign with a 6-0 6-1 thrashing of Cristian on Monday.

Pegula, who played an important role in the United States’ successful campaign at the inaugural United Cup, has improved to 6-1 in 2023. She had won four and lost one of her singles matches in the mixed-gender tournament. She is coming off a solid 43-21 season, which saw her pick up her second career title and also finish runner-up in another tournament. She has already start the new season well and is looking to continue the momentum.

Kostyuk Breezes Past Gadecki

Marta Kostyuk stormed into the third round of the Australian Open with a quick second round win over Australia’s Olivia Gadecki.

Kostyuk finds herself in the Round of 32 in Melbourne for the third time in four attempts. She has never gone past the third round but given the way she has started this year’s campaign she will go into the next match believing that she can do it this year.

The Ukrainian, who knocked out Amanda Anisimova in straight sets on Monday, powered past Gadecki in under an hour on Wednesday. Kostyuk did not face a break point in the match. But she converted 5 of 8 that she held to kncok out the world no. 199, 6-2, 6-1.

The Ukrainian had dropped just eight points on her serve in the entire match. She had put up a similar performance against Anisimova in the opening round. Converting all four of the break points that she held, she saved 5 of 7 and defeated the American 6-3, 6-4.

This was Kostyuk’s fourth main draw win of the year and a sixth overall, after going from qualifiers to quarterfinals in Adelaide-1.

Pegula v Kostyuk Prediction and Tip

Pegula is in fantastic form at the moment. Barring a straight sets defeat to Petra Kvitova in her first match of the season, she has not lost a set again this season and is on a six-match winning streak, which includes a win over Iga Swiatek at the United Cup. She looked in good touch in the first two rounds in Melbourne as well and will be the favourite in the next round against Kostyuk.

The Ukrainian too has got into a good rhythm but will face an uphill task against the third seed.
