Tsitsipas Eases Into Fourth Round

Three-time Australian Open semifinalist Stefanos Tsitsipas moved into the last 16 of this year’s edition with a straight sets win over Tallon Griekspoor on Friday.

While it was a relatively straightforward victory for the third seed, he faced some resistance in the second set, having to save a set point at 5-6 (30-40). He eventually clinched the set in the tiebreak and then went on to dominate the world no. 63 in the third set to win the contest 6-2, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.

The two-hour-and-eight-minute contest saw the world no. 4 strike seven aces and 32 winners. He won 81% points on the back of his first serve and converted 3 of 7 break points, while saving the only one that he faced in the second set.

Tsitsipas, who is the highest seed remaining in the men’s draw after the departures of top seed Rafael Nadal and second seed Casper Ruud, is aiming to reach a third consecutive quarterfinal in Melbourne, which will also be his fourth last eight appearance in the tournament. He has gone on to reach the semis each time he has made it past the third round.

And he looks on course this year as well. Tsitispas is 7-0 in 2023 following the three wins at the Australian Open. He had won all four of his singles matches at the United Cup earlier this month.

The 2021 French Open finalist carried that form into the first major of the season and has looked clinical so far. He defeated Quentin Halys in the first round and Rinky Hijikata in the second.

Tsitsipas’s Road to Fourth Round

  • beat Quentin Halys 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6)
  • beat Rinky Hijikata 6-3, 6-0, 6-2
  • beat Tallon Griekspoor 6-2, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3

Sinner Rallies From Two Sets Down to Advance

Jannik Sinner fought back from two sets down to oust Márton Fucsovics in the third round on Friday.

The first two sets saw the the World no. 16 come back from a set down, only to concede a second break late in both the sets.

With elimination looming, Sinner changed gears in the third set. The 21-year-old raced to a 5-0 lead in the third, before winning the set 6-1. He found himself a break down early in the fourth, but won six games in a row to take the set and force the decider.

The momentum had completely shifted towards the Italian, who bageled the world no. 78 in the final set, to close out the match by winning 12 games in a row.

The three-hour-and-30-minute contest ended with Sinner winning 4-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0. Sinner converted 10 of 14 break points and saved 7 of 12 in the match.

The way the Italian finished the contest is how he has been playing in the tournament so far. So it was uncharacteristic of him to have lost the opening two sets. However, he would be happy to have successfully overcome the tough start and get into a rhythm that saw him breeze past Kyle Edmund and Tomás Martín Etcheverry in the first two rounds.

Sinner is 5-1 this season, with the loss coming against Sebastian Korda in the quarterfinals in Adelaide — his only tournament ahead of the Australian Open.

The Italian is attempting to reach a second straight quarterfinal at the Melbourne major. Last year, he was beaten in the last eight stage by Tsitsipas. Can he beat the third seed this year? It will be an uphill task for him as he has a 1-4 record against the Greek and has not won a set against the world no. 4 in the last three matches.

Sinner’s Road to Fourth Round

  • beat Kyle Edmund 6-4, 6-0, 6-2
  • beat Tomás Martín Etcheverry 6-3, 6-2, 6-2
  • beat Márton Fucsovics 4-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0
