Zhang In Fine Form

Zhang Shuai celebrated her 34th birthday with a straight sets drubbing of Katie Volynets on Saturday that helped her reach the fourth round of the Australian Open.

It is just the second time that the Chinese player has reached this far in her 12 appearances at the Melbourne major. The last time she reached this far was in 2016, when she was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Johanna Konta.

Zhang is coming off a very good 2022 season. She ended a five-year title drought last year, winning in Lyon, and also reached another final in Birmingham. In addition she was also consistent throughout the season, thus breaking into the top 30 on the world. Currently sitting on a career-high ranking of no. 22, the three-time tour-level champion has been playing some great tennis in Melbourne.

Zhang knocked out Romania’s Patricia Maria Țig 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 in the first round and then ousted Croatia’s Petra Martić 6-3, 6-3 in the next.

She continued to dazzle in the third round on Saturday, needing just 65 minutes to dispatch the world no. 113.

Dictating her terms from the start of the contest, Zhang broke Volynets in the very first game of the match and broke her again in the last game to take a 1-0 lead. She maintained her supremacy in the second set as well, winning four games in a row to take the set and the match 6-3, 6-2.

It’s the first time in her career, that Zhang has reached back-to-back fourth rounds in majors. She had lost in the Round of 16 at the 2022 U.S. Open, can she make it to the last eight in Melbourne?

Zhang’s Road to Fourth Round

  • beat Patricia Maria Țig 6-1, 4-6, 6-0
  • beat Petra Martić 6-3, 6-3
  • beat Katie Volynets 6-3, 6-2

Pliskova Makes Quick Work of Gracheva

No. 30 seed Karolina Pliskova is playing some high quality tennis at the Australian Open, as a result of which she now finds herself in the fourth round in Melbourne. This is the fourth time in her 10 attempts that she has made it to the Rond of 16. Interestingly, on all the previous three occasions she has at least gone on to reach the quarterfinals.

While the Czech went down in the last eight stage in 2017 and 2018, she made it to the semis in 2019, only to go down to the eventual champion Naomi Osaka.

The two-time Grand Slam finalist, who missed out last year due to a hand injury, is looking like a strong contender this year.

She began her Melbourne challenge with a straightforward 6-1, 6-3 win over China’s Wang Xiyu and carried that ruthless form into the second round, where she bagelled Yulia Putintseva in the first set, before the Kazakh put up a fight in the second.

Both players came back from a break down once each in the second set, before Pliskova ended the match with a third break in the set.

On Saturday, Pliskova registered a third straight sets win in a row as she powered past Varvara Gracheva in just an hour and 18 minutes. The 16-time tour-level champion did not face a single break point against the Russian, while she converted three of seven to beat Gracheva 6-4, 6-2.

Can the world no. 31 reach the Australian Open quarterfinals for the fourth time with a win on Monday? Although she is ranked nine places below Zhang, she will have an upper hand in the contest.

Pliskova has a superior game and a proven Grand Slam record. To top that, she has dominated the rivalry against the Chinese, winning all of their seven previous battles. They haven’t met since Indian Wells in 2018, but she still will have a huge psychological edge in the fourth round.

Pliskova’s Road to Fourth Round

  • beat Wang Xiyu 6-1, 6-3
  • beat Yulia Putintseva 6-0, 7-5
  • beat Varvara Gracheva 6-4, 6-2
