Novak Djokovic v Andrey Rublev Head to Head

There have been three previous matches between these two and Djokovic leads 2-1. The Serb won at the 2021 ATP Finals and 2022 ATP Finals while Rublev’s only victory came on the clay courts of Belgrade. They have never faced off in outdoor hardcourt competition before this.

Djokovic Brushes de Minaur Away

There have been talks about Djokovic’s fitness. There were also talks around de Minaur’s chances given all the home support he would have in his fourth round match against Djokovic.

None of them helped the Aussie on the day as a clinical Djokovic ran off to the most facile fourth round win of this season’s Australian Open.

Djokovic was ruthless in his two hours, seven minute long encounter which he won 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 to march closer to his 10th title at this tournament.

Winning 75% of his first serve points in the match, Djokovic did not face a single break-point while he managed to break de Minaur six times. 26 winners and 27 unforced errors punctuated Djokovic’s effort but with de Minaur knowing he couldn’t afford to engage the Serb in rallies, he himself lost 28 points to unforced errors.

Having won the Adelaide International title in the first week of the season, Djokovic has dropped just one set so far at Melbourne Park and that came against Enzo Couacaud. Following that second round win, Djokovic had his problems with his hamstring against Grigor Dimitrov in the third but still came through in straight sets.

He now faces somewhat of a challenging from his Russian opponent but we are looking at a juggernaut that is refusing to stop.

Rublev Scrapes Past Rune

Rublev was in for a slugfest against Holger Rune and he knew that even before entering the encounter. Part of it was to do with the fact that Rune is a much-improved hardcourt player – enough to have defeated Djokovic at the Paris Masters last season – and partly because Rublev himself hasn’t been in the peak of form.

And that’s exactly how the match turned out to be.

The Russian went ahead with a decisive break in the eighth game of the opening set but then frittered away three break-points in the second set before getting broken in the fourth game.

A strong serving from both the players meant all it took was one poor game from Rune in the third set to allow Rublev to pouch the lead again. Rune retaliated with a break in the sixth game of the fourth, and while he failed to serve it out in the ninth, he broke right back in the 10th to make it two sets apiece.

In the final set, Rune went 5-2 up and served for the match in the ninth game only to be broken to love. Rublev then faced two match-points on his own serve which he saved, missed two match-points in the tie-breaker that followed before squeaking past his opponent off the third.

Rublev’s task will now be to recover quickly enough and get ready in time for a brutally tough quarterfinal encounter against a player of whom he said – “no-one wants to face him.”

Can Rublev come up with a surprise?

Djokovic v Rublev Prediction and Tips

Djokovic might face a bit of resistance in one of the sets but otherwise, it’s the Serb expected to come through. One of the sets might go into a tie-breaker.
