Novak Djokovic v Stefanos Tsitsipas Head to Head

There have been 12 previous meetings between these two and Djokovic leads the head to head 10-2. All of these 12 matches have come in the period between 2018 and 2022.

Tsitsipas had won at their first match in Toronto in 2018 and then again in Shanghai in 2019. Since then Djokovic has beaten him in nine successive matches including the 2021 French Open final which went for five sets.

Djokovic Pulverises Paul after Slow Start

Djokovic has lost a set in this tournament but other than that he has been clinical in his display. Coming into his semifinal against Tommy Paul, the nine-time Australian Open winner had dropped 12 games spread across the previous six sets, defeating Alex de Minaur and Andrey Rublev on his way.

Which is why when the Serb raced off to serve for the opening set at 5-1 against Paul, it looked like another drubbing was on the cards.

The rout did happen but not before Paul managed to break Djokovic two times to level things out at 5-5 in the first. From there on though, Djokovic rediscovered his lost mojo and dropped a mere three of the following 17 games to win in straight sets.

Djokovic remained on court for two hours and 22 minutes in his 7-5, 6-1, 6-2 win as he slammed 12 aces and 31 winners in his victory. 24 of his surprisingly high, 39 unforced errors, came in the first set before he re-settled back into his game and clinched the win.

With Djokovic having not been tested for a while since he dropped a set in the second round, and with his fitness looking like it’s not been of much concern since the third round, it looks like overcoming him might not be the easiest proposition for anyone.

Tsitsipas Overcomes Stumble in Khachanov Win

He was heading to a straight-set win by the looks of things but a stumble in the third set as he served for the match cost Tsitsipas an extra 40-odd minutes.

In the end, the Greek number one carved out a four-set win over Karen Khachanov in the semifinal to enter his first ever title-decider at Australian Open and second Grand Slam final of his career.

Tsitsipas 7-6 (2), 6-4, 5-4 lead against Khachanov but then, much like the opening set, he was broken as he served for it. Two match-points came and went in the tie-breaker that followed before the Russian surprised the fans by winning the third set.

In the fourth, however, Tsitsipas found his bearings again in the second game as he broke and then held on to his serve for the rest of the set without any trouble to seal the final’s berth.

This follows a run of four wins during the United Cup which means Tsitsipas, like Djokovic, is yet to lose a match this season. With wins over Grigor Dimitrov, David Goffin, Borna Coric, Matteo Berrettini and Jannik Sinner already under his belt, his confidence would be soaring too.

The problem, however, is he seems to be up against an unstoppable force and an immovable object both combined in one here.

Djokovic v Tsitsipas Prediction and Tips

Djokovic is 1/5 favourite to win this, odds quite short for a final between world numbers five and four. Interestingly even against Nick Kyrgios at the last Wimbledon final, Djokovic had started off only a 3/10 favourite, underlining how much of a difference there is between these two.

Expecting Djokovic to cruise here, with Tsitsipas able to put up a fight in one of the three sets. Yep, we think this could well be a straight-set win too.
