Tsitsipas Sees Off Khachanov

Stefanos Tsitsipas has ended his semifinal jinx at the Australian Open as the Greek knocked out 18th seed Karen Khachanov in a three-hour-and-19-minute clash on Friday to move into his second Grand slam final.

The Greek, who was a runner-up to Novak Djokovic at the 2021 French Open, had reached the semifinals in Melbourne thrice in his previous five appearance, but couldn’t go past the final four stage in any of those occasions.

On Friday, the 24-year-old struck 18 aces and 66 winners to dispatch the world no. 20, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3. He could have done it in three sets, but squandered two match points in the third set tiebreak allowing Khachanov to pull a set back. But the Greek steadied himself in the fourth set and ensured there were no more slip-ups. He broke the Russian earlier in the set and then held on to that lead to win the match and move into the final.

Tsitsipas won 84% points on his first serve, converted 5 of 12 break points and saved 1 of 4.

With the win, Tsitsipas has improved to 10-0 in 2023. He had won all four of his singles matches in the United Cup, in his only tournament before the season’s first major.

Carrying his form to Melbourne, Tsitsipas was off to a flying start in the tournament, breezing past the first three opponents — Quentin Halys, Rinky Hijikata and Tallon Griekspoor — in straight sets. He then survived a fourth round scare, holding off a spirited challenge from Jannik Sinner, who came back from two sets down to force the decider, before going down in the fifth.

The world no. 4 was back to his routine in the quarterfinal, sending Jiri Lehecka packing in three, before seeing off Khacahnov in the semifinal.

Tsitsipas has a 9-15 record from 24 career finals. Can he win his first major and a 10th career title on Sunday and reach the no. 1 ranking for the first time in his career?

Tsitsipas’s Road to Final

  • beat Quentin Halys 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6)
  • beat Rinky Hijikata 6-3, 6-0, 6-2
  • beat Tallon Griekspoor 6-2, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3
  • beat Jannik Sinner 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3
  • beat Jiri Lehecka 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) 6-4
  • beat Karen Khachanov 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3

Djokovic Powers Past Paul

Fourth seed Novak Djokovic overcame an early stutter to dispatch first-time major semifinalist Tommy Paul in straight sets on Friday to advance to the final of the Australian Open for the 10th time in his career.

He has a perfect 9-0 record in finals in the Melbourne major and will be hoping to extend that record on Sunday when he faces Tsitsipas in the final. Djokovic has a 10-2 head-to-head record against the Greek and has won all nine of their previous meetings, going 4-0 last year. The last time, when Tsitsipas defeated Djokovic , it was in Shanghai in 2019. So the rivalry has been dominated by the Serb and he will look to extend that further on Sunday.

A win will give Djokovic his 22nd major title, tying him with Rafael Nadal for the most number of Grand Slam titles. It will also be Djokovic’s 10th Australian Open title, extending his perfect run in the finals in the Melbourne major to 10-0 and propel him to the no. 1 spot in the rankings.

The 35-year-old, who won the Adelaide International 1 title in the run-up to the season’s first major, extended his perfect run in 2023 to 11-0 on Friday. He is also on a 27-match unbeaten run at the Australian Open, having won three titles in a row from 2019 to 2021 before having to miss out in 2022 due to his COVID vaccine status.

Agains Paul, the world no. 5 was off to a flying start, taking a 5-1 lead in the opening set following a double break. But just when it seemed that he was cruising, Paul bounced back, winning four games in a row and tying the set at 5-5. Djokovic won the next two to take a one-set-to-love lead and then dropped just three more games in the match to outclass the American 7-5, 6-1, 6-2 in two hours and 20 minutes.

Djokovic has looked in tremendous form, with Enzo Couacaud being the only player to have taken a set of him in the tournament in the second round. He did seem bothered by the hamstring during the semifinal win but looked in control during the match.

Can he keep the rhythm going in the final and capture a record-tying 22nd Grand Slam title?

Djokovic’s Road to Final

  • beat Roberto Carballés Baena 6-3, 6-4, 6-0
  • beat Enzo Couacaud 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-0
  • beat Grigor Dimitrov 7-6 (9-7), 6-3, 6-4
  • beat Alex De Minaur 6-2, 6-1, 6-2
  • beat Andrey Rublev 6-1, 6-2, 6-4
  • beat Tommy Paul 7-5, 6-1, 6-2
