Tatjana Maria v Lesia Tsurenko Head to Head

There have been no previous meetings between these two players at the highest level. They did play each other on the ITF circuit in 2009 and in the 2015 Brisbane International qualifiers and shared those results.

Tsurenko Outlasts Kalinskaya

Anna Kalinskaya’s form has generally seen an upswing over the last 12 months or so and taking on a player who has been struggling in recent times, she was a 1/2 favourite to come through.

In a matter of 27 minutes, Tsurenko had broken that belief as she bagelled Kalinskaya in the first set of their second round encounter.

There was a fightback from Kalinskaya, who saved two match-points in the second set to push into the tie-breaker that followed before clinching the equaliser 7-3. At this stage, it did look like Tsurenko’s grasp on the match looked to be dwindling but she wasn’t quite done.

In the decider, the two traded four breaks of serves to see things through to 3-3 before Tsurenko broke Kalinskaya for the 11th time in the match. It was also the last time the match saw a break as the Ukrainian player held on to her serve to 15 on two occasions to clinch a place in the quarterfinal.

This will be her second quarterfinal appearance in the last four tournaments and Tsurenko will hope to make it to the last four for the first time since Brisbane in 2019.

Maria Routs Yastremska

After having made a slow start to the season, Maria looked to have found he rhythm by featuring in the Pune ITF last week. She had gone on to win that tournament without dropping a set and has continued her form this week with back to back straight-set victories.

In the first round, Maria overcame the 217th-ranked Alexandra Eala but making her form look even more special was her second round win against Dayana Yastremska.

Maria raced away to a 6-0, 6-4 win over her Ukrainian opponent in a mere hour and 21 minutes.

While the first set was a straightforward deal for Maria in which she did not face a single break-point, things did look like they could have gone awry for her in the second. Having taken a 3-0 lead, Maria dropped her serve every single game from that point onward.

What worked in her favour was she retaliated every break with a break of her own and in the end, won off Yastremska’s serve as she served to stay in the match.

Maria v Tsurenko Prediction and Tip

Not much to choose between these two but Maria’s more recent run makes her a slight favourite for us too. Could see a third set in the encounter though.
