Alexander Zverev v Stan Wawrinka Head to Head

There have been four previous meetings between these two players and Zverev has won every single time. All four of these matches came in hardcourt competitions including two indoors.

Zverev Slow off the Blocks After Injury Return

There will be a huge relief for Zverev off the court after a domestic abuse case against him was found to have no substance by the ATP. On court, however, Zverev will be hoping to turn things around following a below-par return to tennis following his injury last season.

Zverev had missed the entire season after the 2022 French Open and returned to court this year at the United Cup. He featured in two matches there – against Jiri Lehecka and Taylor Fritz – and did not win a single set.

At the Australian Open, Zverev managed to get past Juan Pablo Varillas in a hard-fought five-setter in his opener but was then sent packing in four sets by Michael Mmoh in the second round.

The German will hope to not only help his side gain a valuable point for this Davis Cup tie, he would also want to get some valuable time on court in which he shows signs of improvement heading into the Sunshine Masters.

Can he make it five wins in a row against Wawrinka?

Wawrinka Struggling to Get Going Too

Injuries and form issues have been Wawrinka’s bane in recent years and that has led to a fall in his ranking to 135th in the world. And it has been no different for the Swiss player this year as he enters this match on the back of two defeats from three matches.

Wawrinka started things off with a victory against Alexander Bublik in the United Cup but then fell away in straight sets to Hubert Hurkacz in the second singles match in that tournament.

He followed it up with an opening round encounter at the Australian Open against Alex Molcan for which he was a 3/10 favourite and yet, Wawrinka lost in five.

This follows an underwhelming 2022 season for Wawrinka where he won just eight of his 23 main draw matches on the ATP Tour.

Can he test out his more fancied German opponent who is also struggling for wins?

Zverev v Wawrinka Prediction and Tip

Zverev would have been an overwhelming favourite to win this had he been remotely as fit as he was before his surgery last season. Given the current circumstances, this could go either way. Three-setter expected.
