Potapova Edges Burel

Fifth seed Anastasia Potapova scored a second straight three-set win in Lyon on Thursday to move into the quarterfinals of the tournament.

The world no. 43, who had come back from a set down to beat Spain’s Marina Bassols Ribera in the first round on Monday, needed two hours and eight minutes to dispatch France’s Clara Burel in the second round on Thursday.

Potapova converted five of 11 break points and saved nine of 13 to beat the world no. 107, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

The highly competitive match saw the first set end with three consecutive breaks of serve, with Potapova breaking on either side of Burel’s break. In the second set, Potapova got an early break, but she threw away a 1-3 advantage as Burel won four consecutive games and then held on to take the set and draw level at one-set apiece.

In the final set, Potapova was the first to break to lead 3-1. Burel got the break back in the very next game, but the Russian restored the advantage immediately and didn’t look back again in the match.

In the opening round, Potapova had beaten Bassols Ribera 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Potapova improved her main draw record in 2023 to 3-2. She is coming off a very good 2022 season, when she won her maiden WTA title in Istanbul and finished runner-up in Prague.

Zanevska Zooms Past Zhang

Maryna Zanevska needed just 68 minutes to thrash the second seed and defending champion Zhang Shuai in the second round on Thursday.

Dominating from the very start, the Belgian broke the Chinese player twice in the first set and then bageled her in the second for a 6-2, 6-0 victory.

The world no. 93 converted half of the 10 break points that she held and saved the only one that she faced in the match to send the world no. 23 packing.

The 29-year-old Belgian had also won her opening round match in straight sets, defeating Dalma Gálfi 6-1, 7-6 (7-3).

Zanevska, who won her maiden WTA title in Poland in 2021, had struggled for most parts of 2022. But she finished the season well, winning her first-ever WTA 125 title. She is currently 3-1 in main draws in 2023 and 5-2 overall.

She had reached the Round of 16 in Hobart as a qualifier, was knocked out in the opening round of the Australian Open, but has won two in Lyon and is looking dangerous. Can Zanevska go deeper in the tournament?

Potapova v Zanevska Prediction and Tip

Over the first two matches, Potapova has shown she is a tough competitor and can find her way back in the match. Her form over the last one year has been pretty good and the fifth seed will be eyeing a spot in the semifinals. Zanevska won’t be an easy player to beat as the Belgian handed the defending champion a straight sets drubbing on Thursday and will be high on confidence.

It will be a close affair, but in the end Potapova should hold nerves and win another three-setter.
