Paul’s Strong Start to 2023

Tommy Paul made the Australian semi-final recently losing to Novak Djokovic but it was a really strong start for the American. He’s been knocking on the door of the top 20 for a while and now he’s finally showing a level that is worthy of that ranking.

The 25-year-old is 6-2 in 2023 with some impressive showings on hard courts. This will be a matchup that will suit him really well because he plays really strong tennis indoors. His first ATP trophy was won indoors in Stockholm so this should be rather comfortable for him.

Sultanov is a decent player yet he’s never played tennis at a level high enough to achieve what Paul did. He might put up solid resistance against the American considering the fact that he’s playing at home but I don’t expect too much resistance.

If the American plays anything like he can, this should be easy.

Huge Chance for Sultanov

Sultanov rarely gets the chance to play tennis at such a high level because he mostly plays ITF events or Challengers. He can play tennis and his best tennis comes on hard courts where he has 91-61 record overall but he never takes on players of Paul’s quality.

He did start the year strongly with a 9-3 record so far so he’s in form and that, along with the fact that he’s playing at home, in front of his native fans, on a court he knows is something that can balance it out a bit. A lot will depend on how he serves.

There will also be significant pressure for him when Paul serves and especially when he returns. Expect a lot of strong balls from the American so his handling them will be crucial.

I see him putting on a brave effort although I seriously doubt he can do much. The quality and talent simply aren’t there.

Paul v Sultanov Prediction and Tip

As I said above this one is on Paul’s racquet. There is very little Sultanov can do but Paul has played himself out of matches before. If he doesn’t this is a 2-0 win.
