Anett Kontaveit v Shuai Zhang Head to Head
These two have faced off five times before this and Kontaveit holds a 3-2 edge. Two of these meetings came last year and both won once apiece including a Cincinnati Open match where Zhang had edged out Kontaveit from being a set down.

By most players’ standards, a 1-3 win-loss record to kick-start the season is an underwhelming one but for someone who was ranked second in the world as recently as August last year, Kontaveit would be mightily disappointed.
One can attribute those losses to a difficult draw, sure, but Kontaveit has won five titles of her own over the last couple of seasons.
Which is why those defeats to Qinwen Zheng, Paula Badosa and Magda Linette would hurt too. Kontaveit could have been expected to win one if not at least two of those matches and rather unsurprisingly had gone in all those three as a favourite.
With the Australian Open Swing behind her, Kontaveit will hope she can turn the corner and quickly at that as she hopes to prevent a slide down the rankings.
It was the month of February last year that Kontaveit had made the final of two tournaments and won one of them – an early defeat here will see her lose a lot of her ranking points.

Zhang Coming off Shock Lyon Result
It has been the brightest of starts for Zhang who had begun the season ranked 22nd in the world. Four tournaments into the season, the Chinese player might have fallen just one spot but she has won just four main draw matches.
A fourth round appearance at the Australian Open was par for the course but other than that Zhang’s results have been quite ordinary.
Take the example of the Lyon Open where she was the second seeded and played Maryna Zanevska in the second round. She shouldn’t have had a problem winning the match.
Instead, not only did Zhang lose but also captured just two games in the match. Strange result.
Even before the Australian Open, Zhang had been sent packing from the Adelaide International in the first round and then failed to qualify for the Adelaide International 2.
