Jelena Ostapenko v Danielle Collins Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the 2018 Miami Open and Ostapenko crushed Collins in the semifinals on her way to the runner-up trophy.

Ostapenko Coming off Australian Open Quarters

As far as form and confidence goes, Ostapenko would be on the top of the world given the manner in which things have gone for her recently.

Sure, the Latvian number one struggled to get going at the start of the season, as she lost in the second round of the Adelaide International and then crashed out in the first round at the second tournament in the same city the following week.

Come the Australian Open, however, Ostapenko was a different beast.

She with wins over Dayana Yastremska, Anna Bondar and Kateryna Baindl, Ostapenko set herself up for a fourth round clash with Cori Gauff. Now Gauff was a 1/5 favourite going into that match but Ostapenko sent her packing 7-5, 6-3 to make it as far as the quarterfinals where she finally fell to Elena Rybakina.

Can Ostapenko take that form forward come the first round in Abu Dhabi?

Collins’ Fallen to 40th in the World

Only a year ago, Collins had made it to the final of the Australian Open and broken into the top 10 of the WTA Rankings. She would go on to peak at seventh in the world in July later that season.

Since then, however, Collins hasn’t played a lot of competitive tennis and even when she has done that, her form has been underwhelming. Which is why, come the start of this tournament in Abu Dhabi, Collins starts off ranked 40th in the world.

She started the season off with a first round loss in Adelaide and in Adelaide 2, she managed to make it to the quarterfinals

At the Australian Open, Collins made the third round but for the second time this season, she was shot down by Elena Rybakina.

There are two ways of looking at this. One she will need to start putting together better tournament results to get herself back into the top 20 for starters. The other thing here is her lack of tennis has pulled her ranking down pushing her to feature in early round matches against some of the top players.

Can she shrug off the draw concerns and get a deep result going here?

Ostapenko v Collins Prediction and Tip

Interestingly, Collins starts off a favourite here and we will have to back that result. On paper, Collins is a high-quality paper and she did show that at the Australian Open despite her early defeat.
