Jelena Ostapenko v Danielle Collins
A superb round-one matchup awaits us in Abu Dhabi as Danielle Collins will take on Jelena Ostapenko. It’s a matchup between two excellent players who both hit the ball hard and it’s really going to be interesting to see who does better.
They only played once so far and Ostapenko won that match in two sets. They had a similar start to the year as Ostapenko has a 5-3 record with Collins having a 4-3 record. I don’t expect to see many long points here as both will look to keep it short.
Both are quite streaky so they could dominate the match but also play so poorly that essentially they lose rather quickly. Neither has played since the Australian Open so they come here after a reset. It’s a new event so neither ever played but both do well in fast conditions.
It will honestly come down to who plays better on that day and we think both will do fine. We expect a tight 3-set battle.

Donna Vekic v Tamara Korpatsch
Donna Vekic played really well at the start of the year and it’s been good to see her come back to her best. Some of her best tennis came indoors and it will be interesting to see how she does when she returns in those conditions. Korpatsch is a tricky player but also not one that is on the level of Vekic.
They never played before so this would be their first match against each other but generally, they have somewhat of a similar style. Vekic is far more talented and is a better fit on clay but Korpastch is a really good hitter who likes to drag out rallies.
She does best on clay due to that and Vekic can become frustrated and miss a lot of balls. One important thing to note is that Vekic is playing far better right now. A 9-1 record so far this year compared to a rather poor 0-4 start for Korpatsch.
Anything but a win for Vekic would be a huge surprise but we think the German can keep this match rather close.

Sorana Cirstea v Marta Kostyuk
Another interesting round-one matchup in Abu Dhabi is between Cirstea and Kostyuk. Both of these players are really strong hard court players but they had very different starts to the year. Kostyuk has been really good with an 8-4 record while Cirstea was okay with a 3-3 record.
She should have a better record considering her talent but the veteran seems to be losing as she gets older. They played once so far and Cirstea was able to win that match last year in Istanbul. The better hard court player right now is Kostyuk and she will be slightly favoured in this matchup.
Cirstea had more time to rest as the Ukranian had to travel from Thailand which might have left her a bit tired before this one.
I think we’ll see a close match. Cirstea rarely losses in straight sets and she will certainly give her all to win this match. I do think Kostyuk gets it in the end 2-1 making the over a good option.
