Joao Sousa v Tomas Martin Etcheverry Head to Head

This will be the first career meeting between World No. 84 Joao Sousa and World No. 82 Tomas Martin Etcheverry.

Sousa to fly from Davis Cup Qualifiers

At the time of writing, Joao Sousa is due to play his second singles rubber against Czech Republic’s Jiri Lehecka. The Czechs are in the driver’s seat, taking a commanding 2-0 lead from day one in Maia.

That leaves Portugal with a mountain to climb despite playing on home soil and on clay where Sousa tends to conjure up his best tennis.

Sousa lost his opening singles match to Tomas Machac in three pulsating sets. The match itself was a nail-biter and despite a vibrant atmosphere by the Portuguese fans, Sousa was unable to finish off his opponent. He struck 23 winners to Machac’s 39 and was broken five times.

For Portugal it could be curtains on Sunday should they lose their doubles match, thereby ending their pursuit of history at the Davis Cup.

Etcheverry Bound to be Fresh on Home Soil

Tomas Martin Etcheverry won a Grand Slam main draw match for the first time at this year’s Australian Open. He defeated France’s Gregoire Barrere in four sets.

But the Argentine was swept away by Jannik Sinner in the second round pretty routinely. Etecheverry regards clay as his forte, and it comes with little surprise to see him begin his Golden Swing adventure at the Cordoba Open.

Last year he won a single main draw match in February, which incidentally came at this very tournament when he upset Chile’s, Nicolas Jarry. And he’ll be looking to go one better this year than the Round-of-16 showing he conjured up in the last two editions.

Etchverry, however, excelled on the Challenger Tour, making five finals at that level and walking away with one title in 2022.

Sousa v Etcheverry Prediction and Tip

Etcheverry will be playing on clay for the first time this season. That could put him at a disadvantage against Sousa who will have got his socks dirty playing at the Davis Cup over the weekend. But considering the Portuguese’s long trip from Maia, he might not even get sufficient rest time.
