Ekaterina Alexandrova v Rebeka Masarova Head to Head

Alexandrova and Masarova have never faced off before this.

Alexandrova Returns from Australian Open Third Round Exit

It hadn’t been the best of starts for Alexandrova in the lead-up to the Australian Open with the Russian world number 17 losing two of the three matches she had played.

Alexandrova might not have been very pleased with those results given they came on the back of a solid season that had seen win two titles at the highest level.

Those had led Alexandrova to a place in the top 20 of the WTA charts – a career-high ranking of 17th – and to then have stumbled to a first round loss at the Adelaide International and a second round withdrawal at Adelaide International 2 because of fitness woes would have been an irritant.

At the Australian Open, Alexandrova did get some of her act together. Her fitness did not look to be a problem as she sent Ysaline Bonaventure and Taylor Townsend out but then lost her third round match to Magda Linette.

There were signs of getting back some of her groove and that will be tested in this tournament where she has made the semifinal (twice) and the final earlier too.

Masarova Climbing up the Rankings Ladder Quickly

As recently as in 2021, Masarova was not even in the top 700 of the WTA Rankings. She broke into the top 200 that season and managed to maintain that throughout 2022, while peaking at 121st in the world.

This year, thanks to her brilliant showing at the Auckland Open as a qualifier, Masarova notched up another feather in her hat as she entered the top 100 in the world.

The Spaniard hit 93rd on the charts before falling to her current ranking of 99th. This is great news for Masarova and if she can pull such performances and maintain this ranking for another month or so, it could allow her first look into a direct qualification for a Grand Slam – her first ever such entry.

Can she pull off an upset here for starters though?

Alexandrova v Masarova Prediction and Tip

Alexandrova is 2/5 to win this and despite Masarova’s strong showing in Auckland we will have to go with the Russian’s win. Might see Masarova sneak in a tie-breaker or even win a set though.
