Blinkova Was a Semifinalist in Hobart

Anna Blinkova had a wonderful start to the season, reaching the semifinals in Hobart in the second week of January. But since losing the final four clash to Lauren Davis, she has made two back-to-back first round exits.

Blinkova went down to Madison Keys in a close three-set opener at the Australian Open and then was forced to retire from the third set of her Lyon opener against qualifier Erika Andreeva.

She had started the season with by reaching the second round in Auckland, before going from qualifiers to semifinal in Hobart. The world no. 67 ousted Lucia Bronzetti, Marie Bouzkova and Yulia Putintseva en route the semis before going down to Davis.

Last year was a pretty successful one for the 24-year-old, who captured her maiden WTA crown by winning the Transylvania Open. She also finished runner-up at a WTA 125 in Saint Malo and was a finalist in three ITF tournaments.

The Russian had an overall record of 48-30 last season, playing her best on indoor surfaces and clay. On hard courts, she was 7-8 from all levels.

Gracheva Makes the Main Draw

Varvara Gracheva lost to Germany’s Anna-Lena Friedsam in the second qualifying round on Monday but made it to the main draw as lucky loser.

The 22-year-old lost the match 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 against the German.

The world no. 84 had earlier beaten Sinja Kraus 6-2, 6-4 in the first qualifying round on Sunday.

This will be the second time this year that Gracheva will be featuring in a main draw of an event. She had made it to the third round of the Australian Open for the first time in her career in January. She had shocked Daria Kasatkina and then knocked out Lucrezia Stefanini in the first two rounds before going down to Karolina Pliskova.

Other than that run in Melbourne, she failed to go past the qualifiers in Auckland, Hobart and Lyon. Now that she has found a way to the main draw, can she make the most of it?
