Halys Looking to improve Montpellier Record

Halys does not have a good record on home soil in Montpellier. His five previous visits here have seen him fail to qualify three times, and go out at the first round stage on the other two occasions.

However, he will be hoping that this time things will be different after winning 37 out of 47 games on indoor hard courts last year, and making an encouraging start to the new season.

At the United Cup, he was too strong for Jordan Thompson, and, although he then lost to Novak Djokovic, he pushed him close, losing to two tie-breaks.

In Auckland, he reached the quarter-finals, beating the precocious talent of Ben Shelton in straight sets along the way, before losing to the world number 36, Jenson Brooksby, although the American again had to rely on tie-breaks.

He had a tough draw in the Australian Open, losing to the eventual finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas, although the match was closer than the straight sets scoreline suggests.

Chidekh Makes Main Draw Debut

Chidekh has made a stellar start to the new season, climbing more than 200 places since the start of the year, having won 14 out of 15 matches, all on hard courts.

That saw him claim two ITF titles in the UK, and finish runner-up in a third event.

Having previously played college tennis in the US, he is now looking to make further strides in the professional ranks, and, whatever else happens to him this week, this will be a valuable learning experience, because he is now set to make his maiden main draw appearance against Halys.

He earned the right by beating compatriot Alexandre Muller, ranked almost 300 places higher than him in straight sets in the first round of qualifying, and then defeating the highly experienced Argentine Marco Trungelliti in the second, routing him to love in the first set.

Halys v Chidekh Prediction and Tip

Although Chidekh is a man in form, this is a real step-up in class to what he is normally used to on the ITF circuit.

That makes him a potentially dangerous opponent for Halys because he has nothing to lose, and everything to gain, but Halys is in good form himself, and keen to improve his poor record in this tournament.
