Top seed Maria Sakkari held off Nuria Parrizas Diaz in an hour and 40 minutes in the first round of the Linz Open on Tuesday.

The world no. 7 breezed through the first set, but the Spaniard put up a stern resistance in the second set, before the Greek finally prevailed 6-1, 7-6 (8-6).

Gracheva Gets Hobart Revenge Against Blinkova

Varvara Gracheva was beaten 6-1, 6-1 by Anna Blinkova in the first qualifying round in Hobart last month. The Russian turned the tables on the world no. 67 on Tuesday as she beat Blinkova in straight sets to move into the second round of the tournament.

The world no. 84 was a break down twice in the first set, but she rebounded on both the occasions before getting a third break and clinching the opening set. Blinkova started the second set with a break as well, but Gracheva pulled the break back in the fourth game. Gracheva then got another break later in the set to win the contest 7-5, 7-5.

The Russian has made it to the main draw as a lucky loser. She had beaten Sinja Kraus in straight sets in the first qualifying round but had lost to Anna-Lena Friedsam in a three set contest on Monday.

Gracheva converted 5 of 10 break points in the match and saved half of the six that she faced against Blinkova.

With the win, Gracheva improved to 5-5 in 2023. Her only other main draw appearance this year saw her reach the third round at the Australian Open. How far can she go in Linz?
