Camila Giorgi v Clara Tauson Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 31 year old Italian, and the Dane, who is eleven years her junior.

Australian Quarter-Finalist Vekic Begins Her Campaign

Vekic is playing in his first tournament since reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, where she was beaten by the eventual winner Aryna Sabalenka. That matched her previous best at a Grand Slam event, having reached the same stage at the US Open in 2019.

She began her campaign in Austria with a match against the German world number 81, Tamara Korpatsch.

The first set was tight, although Vekic had to save three break points in her opening service game, and another when serving to stay in the set.

However, having safely navigated them, she proved the stronger in the subsequent tie-break, and was able to take the first set. Korpatsch briefly entertained hopes of a comeback when she broke Vekic at the start of the second set.

But then her form seemed to desert her completely and she did not win a single point after that. She bowed out with scarcely a whimper.

Tauson Thrashes Third Seed

Tauson has been unlucky with injuries, missing a large chunk of last season and also being forced to sit out the Australian Open last month.

That explains why the Dane, who won two titles in 2021, and was beaten in a further final, is ranked as low as she currently is, and why she was forced to enter the qualifying competition  in Linz.

Certainly the number three seed Irina Begu of Romania would have been wise not to underestimate her in their first round match.

However, if the world number 27 had been warned, it did her little good as Tauson raced into a five love lead in the first set, before the Romanian finally got on the scoreboard. She was powerless to prevent the Dane closing out the set, though.

Begu held her opening serve of the second set and, when she held three break points on the Tauson serve, had brief hopes of a comeback.

She failed to convert any of them, and, to make matters worse, was broken herself again next game. Tauson followed that up with another break, leaving her with the simple task of serving out for the match.

Giorgi v Tauson Prediction and Tip

Although Giorgi is currently the higher ranked of the pair, that does not reflect the true ability of Tauson, who is now determined to make up for lost time after her injury problems of the last year.

Another victory in Linz should help her comeback along that one step further.
