Alejandro Davidovich Fokina advanced to the second round after his opponent Ugo Humbert suffered an injury during their opening round match on Wednesday.
A wild card in Montpellier, Humbert had breezed through the opening set. Davidovich Fokina however showed fight in the second, racing to a 3-0 and 5-2 leads. But he could not close out the set as the Frenchman won three in a row to force the tiebreak.
Humbert was trailing 1-3 in the second-set tiebreak when he suffered the fall. The world no. 85, who was left in tears after the incident, gallantly tried to fight on. But once the Spaniard clinched the second set, he decided to quit the contest.
It was a lucky escape for the world no. 32, who will have to raise his game in the next match if he hopes to match his best in Montpellier. The 23-year-old had reached the quarterfinal in 2021.
He is 4-2 this year following Wednesday’s win and a victory on Thursday could take him into the second quarterfinal of the season. He was also in the last eight in Adelaide-2.

Halys Takes Down Qualifier Chidekh
World no. 70 Quentin Halys of France survived a first round test against qualifier and compatriot Clement Chidekh on Tuesday.
In a match that lasted two hours and 25 minutes, Halys served 25 aces. He got a solitary break in the first set, but a spirited Chidekh fought back in the second, breaking the world no. 70 twice and forcing teh third set.
Ranked 434th in the world, Chidekh continued to match the more experienced Frenchman for the first 11 games of the deciding set but Halys finally broke the debutant in the last game to seal the contest 7-5, 2-6, 7-5.
Halys is 4-3 so far this year. He will also be looking to reach a second quarterfinal fo the season. He had made it to the last eight in Auckland, which so far remains his best in 2023.
Last year, Halys showed tremendous form at the Challenger level, reaching seven finals and winning three of them. He will be hoping to replicate that form at the top level this year.
Davidovich Fokina v Halys Prediction and Tip
Davidovich Fokina has more experience of consistently playing and winning at the top level. He was also a finalist at an ATP 1000 event in Monte Carlo last year, so definitely he is the one who will have the upper hand in the contest. Expect the local hope to put up a fight, but the Spaniard to advance.
